Autoplay not working with Turntable

I can’t get my Amp to autoplay from the turntable. I have tried tweaking the setting a bit, and am pretty sure I’m doing everything correctly, but it doesn’t seem to detect the turntable once I play a record.

My setup -- I have a phono preamp (from Parasound).  No on / off button on the preamp.  In my settings I have Line In autoplay on, Source Name = Turntable, Source Level 10 (High).  It never switches to the turntable when I put on a record.

I’m wondering if the Phono Preamp is always sending some signal since it’s always on, so it can’t detect the change of the record.  Unfortunately there isn’t a way for me to turn off the preamp that I’m aware of.  Thoughts?

Loading the app to switch to the turntable is pretty annoying.  I know its only a few clicks, but it’s pretty anti-thetical to the goal of listening to a record.  Also, it makes it hard for my family to operate if I’m not around.

Ah, sorry - no trigger on that model. I guess there are several ways around - one might be to wire the turntable and the Parasound on their own switched mains supply, so that they both come on together? I guess it depends how “automatic” you want it to be.

I must admit I’m not fond of having to use my phone to control everything either - I use a desktop PC based controller instead (because my PC is always on) to control my Sonos components, but that probably wouldn’t suit many users either!

Assuming that’s the highest gain setting, have you tried at a lower setting, assuming you don’t need it that high to get adequate volume? If it’s picking up mains hum or noise and detecting it as a signal, you may be able to take it below the Amp’s signal threshold by using less gain.

Another option (depending on the model of Parasound preamp) could be to use a 12V trigger to switch on the preamp only when it’s needed - in effect you could add an on/off switch without needing to modify the unit that way. The JC3+ has a 12V trigger, but some other models don’t.

Really appreciate the response, @Antifon !

I’m a n00b with some of this stuff.  I googled 12V triggers and am not totally sure what I’m looking for to know if it would work.  This is the model I have https://parasound.com/products/zc-zphono. If you know of a product that works in the US for that model, that approach seems promising!

As to the Source Level, I’ve tried the extremes (lowest and highest), but will play around with other settings.  Guessing there isn’t a sweet spot that will suddenly make it work though.
