Switching to a WIRED Network - what if multiple devices spread across multiple floors?

Just reading the “Switch Sonos between a wireless and wired setup” document at

https://support.sonos.com/en/article/switch-sonos-between-a-wireless-and-wired-setup

and it mentions to have one device connected via Ethernet, then the other products will change over to the newly created Sonos network.

But I have multiple Sonos devices spread over 3 floors.

Will this method still work?

or should I switch to a Wireless network and just use my Wi-Fi (There is a Access Point close to every Sonos)

I assume this setup mean NO device should be connected via Ethernet

Thank for any help

Well, everything was working fine until I changed my PFSENSE Router to a Ubiquiti UDM Pro Max, Now my network is very unstable, with multiple STP errors across most of my switches.

I spoke to UB and they checked the diag report and said it was due to the SONOS devices. So now trying to work out the right way to setup SONOS on a full Unifi network.

Previously all of my SONOS were hard wired, with WiFi turned off apart from the FIVE and a IKEA Lamp and working fine.

  • I have tried to follow the guides provided by both Ubiquiti and SONOS on how to configure STP. UB says all wireless or all wired (which I physically cant do)
  • I have seen that github guide, but that didn’t work.
  • I have tried to read most of the posts here about these issues and tried some of the recommended actions, but still not resolved.
  • I have a cascading switch design and have correctly set all the Spanning Tree Protocol PRIORITY.
  • IGMP Snooping is enabled.
  • SONOS is on the default Network (Not on a separate VLAN)
  • Every SONOS device has a dedicated IP Address
  • I have tried turning on "Loop Protection" on each port on ALL switches, but that hasn't helped.
  • I have reset every SONOS device and re-added it to the APP.

So having most hard wired and some wireless is not working.

Should I move to a completely wireless system (I assume this means using my WiFi) or 1 Device wired and the rest wireless (I assume this means SONOSNET)

I THINK the answer is completely WiFi as maybe SONOSNET will have issues with multiple floors.

I would prefer to go back to my original setup of “mostly” hard wired, but not sure how to make that work?

Thank you

I have my Sonos mostly wired on a Ubiquiti network. What I have found is having a main speaker hardwired, like your soundbars, with the Sub and surrounds wireless, yields the best results for me.

Then settings that @106rallye posted a link to is spot on, so use those settings.

Here is a screenshot of my Sonos on Unifi with no connectivity issues:

Both Connects, Arc, Play 1 DR, Five (kitchen), and the Amp are hardwired. Sub and surrounds connect directly to the Arc, Portable and Play 5 (Gen 2) use Sonosnet.

How is your system connected at the moment? Are you having any problems? If everything is running fine, why change?

But if you want to try, it’s easy enough to do so. If it causes problems, revert to the setup you have now.

WiFi should be your preferred option new Sonos don't support Sonosnet.

You mentioned close APs keep the minimum distances mind.

My Uni system got a lot more stable when I “accidentally” enabled SonosNet (had to hard-wire my Amp to use it for surrounds).

It looks like all your devices support Sonosnet. You could try if this works for you. Be aware newer Sonos stuff does not do Sonosnet. Here’s more about Sonos and Ubuquity, by the way: https://github.com/IngmarStein/unifi-sonos-doc

That UDM PRO STP/RSTP setting does not effect ports on the UDM PRO, it is the default for connected switches. Don’t wire any SONOS devices directly to the UDM PRO.

Thanks, all the SONOS are on downstream switches. Nothing connected directly to the UDM PRO apart from the core switch.

So it can be done. Thanks

Can I ask what version of Unifi NETWORK are you on? I am using 8.5.6 and there “seems” to be some STP Issues with this version, so maybe its not my SONOS, but a bug in Unifi Software.

Thanks, yeah, I have seen that guide, unfortunately it didn't work for me. Thanks anyway
