Full ethernet connectivity to prevent music dropout

Hello everyone,

 I have the following products

sonos play 5..quantityt 2

sonos sub

sonos connect amp

I consider myself a at home dj for my own pleasure

the connected devices were all via wifi..as follows

  • laptop connected to the wifi .running SONOS and serato pro software
  • denon mc700 connected to the laptop via the usb cable
  • denon mc700 RCA audio output is connected to Sonos connect amp rca audio input
  • both play 5’s and sub connected to the same wifi
  • sonos connect amp connectd to the same wifi

my DJ eqipment is the Denon MC700 and a MSI gaming laptop GS63Vr Stealth pro with the Serato DJ pro software and the Sonos S2 windows app

I would experience music dropout when all devices were connected and playing via WIFI

plus there is the sonos app on my iphone for software updates and audio configuration of the sonos speakers

my quest to eliminate this music dropout issue consisted of doing the following:

connecting all devices with hardwire ethernet cables and a router.

added the following: TP link wr8411n router and the TP link TL-sg108 switch

NEW ethernet  wired CONNECTIVITY consisted of the following

router was configured to provide DHCP ip addresses, thus allowing each device to be assinged a unique ip address

router connected to switch via ethernet , sonos connect amp connected to the switch via ethernet,  laptop connected to switch via ethernet, both play 5’s connected to the switch via ethernet, and the sub connected to the switch via ethernet.

once the wired ethernet connections were established the following was done

on the iphone sonos app

the option  to turn off the wifi on the play 5 and sub was selected

launching the sonos app on the laptop established connectivity to the sonos devices

because my music source is the denon mc700, you have to select and activate line in on the sonos app on the desktop

I was then successful in establishing full wired connectivity and the music dropout issue went away.

PROS/CONS

PRO

in my opinion this is a fix for music dropouts

CONS

sonos devices will not get auto software updates

(to obtain software updates, will have to turn off router and switch

reestablish total wifi connectivity, apply any sonos software updates

once applied, you can then revert back to full wired ethernet connectivity

In your post I see no reason why you would not get any updates. Why do you think this does not work as intended?

Thanks for your question

with this specific wired ethermet  connectivity..I’ve eliminated all wifi to the sonos devices

each device is/are now receiving ip addresses from the local router… thus they are on a different ip subnet than my home wiifi… (192.168.86.x subnet)

this specific router and switch does not have any public facing ip to reach the internet

in reality this setup is strictly a private internal network with no connectivity to any device(modem/router ) that has a external internet connection..no routable ip address exist

for example:

my home wifi private non routable  ipaddress can only get access to the internet if there is a public facing ip address available..that public ip address resides in my ethernet modem/router that connects to the internet provided service…

my internal 192.168.x.x ip address on my home wifi routes to the internet provider routable ip address on my ethernet  modem/router for internet access

the intent of my wired ethernet solution, is to first eliminate the music dropout I was experiencing...and at the same time create a totally private network..

thus for any and all sonos updates I will have to

turn off the private local router and switch

reconnect my sonos devices to the home wifi that has a public facing ip address..

run the app sonos app on my iphone

get any and all updates

once completed

reactivate the local router and switch

activate the sonos app on the iphone

turn off wifi on the sonos

local private is now reactivated..
