I have 7 Sonos speakers (somewhat unfortunately right now) and control them using the Android app. For me, I regularly update and have to power cycle some of my speakers regularly just to make them work. I mostly use a music library that is on a NAS. As much as possible, I have the sonos speakers connected by LAN vs wifi.

What is still broken for me:

  1. I have an Era 100 and an Amp on smart switches as I need to regularly power cycle them for the sonos app to recognize them. This is needed about 50% off the time.
  2. About 25% of the updates, I need to power cycle the speakers for the update to be successful. For my Sonos Move, that is actually 100% of the time I need to do that.
  3. Music Library: when I choose to play a genre OR a playlist, it only works 25% of the time. Most times the app just spins. It NEVER works when I try to start it by pressing the randomize option. I always have to start it using the “PLAY” button and then once playing I can randomize the list.
  4. It always fails when I try to queue another playlist or genre to the current playlist. That never works.
  5. I cannot play and entire genre or playlist without going several steps deep into the playlist or genre - pressing “ALL” several times. With the S2 app I used to be able to play from the top level of the genre or playlist. This is a big UX fail. Adding so many steps that used to be very fluid and fast. This goes against all the tenets of good UX design - I just cannot understand that.
  6. When listening - in mid listening, some of the speakers will go silent for 10-60 seconds while the other play on… and then they rejoin the playing. This is truly bizarre and it is somewhat random on timing and which speaker. It can happen 1-10 times every hour. I expect it is a sync or buffer issue.

At the end of last year there was a message from Sonos that the next release would vastly improve the library playing experience. I have not seen any improvements at all. I wonder if this was deprioritized.

What does work good for me:

  1. The TV with my soundbar and Sonos surrounds does seem to work well - but only in TV mode. Otherwise it has the same issues as above.

Has it been a year yet since the wheels came off at SONOS? It seems like several years to me. Beyond frustrating.

Describe your network for us. What is wired? Wireless? Model numbers? Are you using any mesh points?

The default settings on some routers are not appropriate for the “new improved” SONOS use of the network.

Have you “reserved” IP addresses for all regular network clients?

Thanks for replying

My network is gigabit ethernet to half of the devices and I use a pair of meshed ASUS ZenWiFi AX (XT8) for wifi access points - that cover the other half. I use a TP-LINK ER605 for my router and high-end TP-Link switches.

I do use reserved IPs for all SONOS gear.

The cutouts happen sometimes on ethernet connected and sometimes on wifi connected devices  - no real pattern there.

Wired - Amp, soundbar, 2- SL1s

Wireless Era 100, move and roam

The dropouts are relatively new - last 4-5 months? No change to my network setup. All speakers worked fine before. For that reason, I expect it is something on the SONOS end.

Of course, the MUSIC LIBRARY app issues are all on sonos and are my most serious issues as far as quality of life with SONOS is concerned. :)

I’m not an ASUS user. Here are some points for you to try. And another.

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked both.

Airtime fairness was already disabled.

As for the QoS and IPTV settings, I do not have those - I expect because I only use the XT8s as access points and not in a router configuration.
