Sonos System Disappearing Across Access Points

Has anyone had issues with your Sonos system and wireless Access Points? At my company we have several sites that use Sonos and I’ve noticed that my Sonos app will act as if I do not have anything connected to the system unless I am near the speakers or port. After narrowing down the issue, we discovered that the app was only detecting sonos products that are on the same Access Point or if it is on the main router, even though these AP’s are the same network as the main router. Our network tech confirmed the access points are not blocking any communication between the main router and itself, so I was just wondering if there is anything else I should try or if access points and Sonos are just not going to work. Thanks!

Are the AP on the same subnet?

Are the AP using Vlan if so the Sonos and the controller needs to be on the same Vlan

has the AP got the option to enable multicast packets if so enable it.

Yes the devices are all on the same subnet with no Vlan. Multicast was not enabled so I had our network techs enable it at a site but can confirm it did not help, the issue is the same: I can see all Sonos devices on the system, but can only control the ones I’m near/connected to the same Access Point as. Thank you for those suggestions, if you have any more I am happy to try them.

I’m semi concerned about the use of wireless access points. As indicated here, it states:

Unsupported network setups and devices

  • Networks using wireless range extenders

with a subnote of :

If you need to extend your home WiFi to use Sonos in a wireless setup, we recommend using a WiFi mesh router to do so.

Can you clarify the use of the network, please? They’re not designed for enterprise network use, from what I’ve gathered, I’m wondering if you’re connecting to only the devices that can be currently ‘seen’ on the local node, and not all devices.

Have you called  Sonos Support to discuss it? I’m also curious as to what they told you.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

You can see devices but not control them: what does this mean exactly? Seeing devices requires mDNS working, controlling them requires UPnP (S1) or crazy-ass https APIs (S2).

Try the web app, that doesn’t use the local network for inter-device communication.

I work for a property management company that uses Sonos along with Soundtrack Your Brand to play music in their clubhouses, pools, gyms, etc. They use Fortinet network equipment so the AP in question would be one of the FortiAP’s. I’ll have to confirm some of the network setup from that article you linked, but last time I talked with Sonos support the suggestion was to hardwire if able and move closer to the router, but sometimes that isn’t possible. I forgot to mention this is not a new setup, these devices have been in place for several years but I’ve just been having this issue in the last month or so. If you mean I am only able to connect to Sonos devices that can be seen on the current node, yes that seems to be the issue. Devices like printers can be used regardless if you are on the AP or not. Whenever I go back out to a site I will try to contact support again with some updated information, I just wanted to post here to be able to discuss it further while away from the sites. Thanks!

What has changed in the network system itself? If it used to work but now doesn’t, surely the network infrastructure is more likely to be the issue than the Sonos devices?
