I recently tried to set up an old Sonos Play:5 Gen 1 and when plugged in it shows no indication of being powered on, there is no light at all and the Sonos 1 App cannot locate it.

I have checked the power cord with my volt meter and it is good.

I have done the Factory Reset procedure with no results.

Is this Play:5 completely dead or could there be some other reason for the problem?

Worst case: I can tear it open and use it as a passive speaker.

It’s possible a device of that age is ‘broken/dead’ inside, in some fashion. Your best bet would be to call Sonos Support directly to discuss it.

When you speak directly to the phone folks, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

Thank you for your reply.

My feeling is that with an obsolete or unsupported product companies will point to buying their latest products which in my case I cannot afford even with a trade in allowance.

As I mentioned, the Play:5 can make a good passive speaker.

If you add a crossover you can repurpose it as a passive speaker that sounds decent.

Yes, I’d agree that that makes some sense, from their perspective, but their first priority would be to figure out if that is needed. If there’s some other issue going on, they’d likely be able to figure it out first, before recommending a replacement purchase.

The Play 5, even a gen 1 isn't unsupported or obsolete, a bit old and eligible for a 30% upgrade discount, while still being able to use the Play 5.

Show me another company with a deal like that.

And eligible for the upgrade discount, even if non-functional (but only once per device).
