Sonos One SL PLAYS SPONTANEOUSLY

I have had a stereo pair of Sonos One SL speakers on my covered patio where they are protected.  They’ve been out there for years.  All of a sudden they have been turning on and playing music spontaneously and disturbing my neighborhood.  I don’t want to have to unplug and replug them every time I want to listen.  But the speakers come on when nobody is home and the speakers play all day.

This is becoming a big issue.  Is there something I can do?  Sonos support has been no help.

What did you discuss with Sonos support as far as the problem and a fix?

Spotify accounts have caused issues in the past, as I recall; a user stays “logged in” until you choose a different source. Sonos support can probably tell you what source was playing, and how it was started.

Or, do you have an alarm set?

 Are you using Spotify Connect?

I don’t use Spotify.  I use mostly Apple Music, Pandora and I Heart Radio.  I didn’t want to get too detailed with the story, but this actually started happening last year.  I spent hours on the phone with Sonos and they did diagnostics and rebooted the system.  There was no solution.

My own solution was to plug the speakers into smart plugs that were timed to shut off at night.  However, that became a problem because then they weren’t updating at the right time.  So I’m stuck with these expensive speakers that randomly start playing music while we’re not home.  Fortunately, it has not been in the middle of the night. I’m waiting for that to happen...

What service starts playing?

If you clear the queue and have no music selected to play on the speakers does this still happen?

Interesting, I’ve never seen a spontaneous start of music with Sonos software before. It has always been either an external software command (either Spotify Connect or an alarm, either in Sonos or a home control software system) or a interaction between an animal and the buttons on a speaker (cats, dogs, frogs, lizards). I’m assuming Sonos checked for the music source, and where the ‘start playback’ command came from.

Not sure there’s much I can do to help, if Sonos support isn’t able to. They have access to data from your system that I don’t. It seems like your current solution is working.

It doesn’t have to be you that has a Spotify account. If a friend, neighbour or relative has used their Spotify account to play music on your system, it can be an issue.

If you can capture a diagnostics within a few minutes of an occurrence of this random startup, Sonos support should be able to tell you what source was playing and how it was started.

Are you using Alexa voice control?  Are any alarms set?  Does anyone else have access to your Sonos speakers?

I have noticed when I play a radio station or Pandora then touch Stop or Pause to quit listening the station logo remains on the Now Playing screen.  The only way to get rid of it is to start something that loads the Queue screen then execute Clear Queue.  I doubt this is causing your issue, but you never know.  Does this happen regardless of which service you are using?
