SONOS local network setup without Internet

Hello,

I would like to use my SONOS system on a local network that is completely separate from my regular Wi-Fi network. This is because I won’t have Internet access at the location where I want to use it.

My plan is to set up and update the devices somewhere with Internet access first, and then move them to the local network with a separate router (no Internet connection).

Devices:

  • SONOS PORT
  • SONOS ONE SL

My question is:

If I set up a dedicated Wi-Fi network (with no Internet access), will I be able to play audio from the SONOS PORT to the SONOS ONE SL over this local network?

Thank you very much for your help!

Hi @yosh

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Thanks for your post!

It’s a good question, and not one I can give a guaranteed answer to, but I believe that would work, yes. It is not, however, a supported way of using Sonos devices and I cannot therefore give you a guarantee that it will work.

I do think you’re more likely to have success with @Mr. T’s suggestion: use line in on a pair of (or a single) Era 100s with the line-in adaptor and there’s no need for grouping, so it’d be more likely to work. And cheaper.

I hope this helps.

You can setup some Sonos speakers and use them without internet for limited functionality like Bluetooth on the Era and portable speakers, soundbars or an Amp for TV, but I do not believe grouping them would not be possible.
What audio sources do you plan on using?

I believe that a simple read of Sonos website answers this. This is for the Port:

Tech Specs

Amplified Audio Equipment

A stereo or receiver and passive or Sonos speakers for audio output

WiFi

Internet connection

Power Source

Nearby electrical outlet

Sonos app

The latest generation of the Sonos app running on a compatible device

"Thank you. What I'm thinking is to connect the player to the PORT and send the audio to the ONE SL."

I’d like to set up my SONOS PORT and ONE SL on a WiFi router while it’s connected to the internet, and then use them on the same router as a local network without internet access to play audio.

I assume from your original post that you have not yet actually purchased the Port and One SL

I would actually consider the purchase of 2 Era 100s instead, with the Line-in adapter. That would give you a stereo pair, plus you would also have Bluetooth capability.
