I have four Play 3 units bought some years ago. I have one attached to my ADSL gateway and it works OK as do the other three.

I now want to use one in my workshop, I have a new, different 5G internet there from TMobile that works fine.

What must I do to be able to use one of the Play 3 devices in my workshop and my other WiFi network?

Is it true that one MUST connect it to the gateway via ethernet in order to do this?  I use the Windows desktop app to control Sonos.

Ignore the fact that you have a separate network/wifi in the workshop. If you haven’t turned off SonosNet, you should be fine, assuming the distance isn’t too far. Merely unplug the PLAY:3 from where it is currently, and plug it back in in the workshop.

No real need to do anything other than move it.

Hi Bruce.

Well  I did that, I have the Play 3 in the workshop plugged into the wall, when I start the sonos app on my PC it says “searching for your system” then:

The requirement to connect one Sonos unit to Ethernet has been gone for a while. To set up one of your Sonos on a different WiFi from your current system, you need to set it up as a separate system.

Factory reset the Play:3 you wish to use in the workshop.

Unplug all your Sonos units on the other system so you won’t get any crossover.  Connect your mobile device to the workshop WiFi and start the Sonos app.  Choose to “Create a new system” and follow the prompts.

That’s the PC/Mac app.  You can’t use that to setup a system, you need to use the iOS/Android app on a phone or tablet.

OK I did the reset of the Play 3, and it is now sitting there flashing green. I started the IPhone app before I did that and it said no products found.

Now that the Play has been reset the app still says “Not Connected” and I see no helpful option other than “Go to system settings” and that takes me to a page that offers one option “Update Network”.

I cant get the app on the IPhone to “reload” as it were, like probe for devices as I did when I initially started it.

OK I got past that hurdle and the phone app can see the Play3, but it now says to continue I must connect to a “temporary network” what does that mean?

It means your phone is going to temporarily connect to the Play:3 to set it up for your wifi network.

I was kind of hoping the SonosNet set up by the speaker connected to the router was going to connect to this speaker as well. However, now that you’ve factory reset it, and told it about the ‘new network’ that your phone is connected to, you’re going to have two systems, on two networks. Your original, and now this single speaker connected to the workshop network.

Well I got past all that, the messages and instructions these app display is inexcusable, misleading or just bewildering.

I got the play 3 recognized in the end but the fun is not over yet. I am trying to add KBAQ to the damn thing but it can’t find that under “Radio” (I have that as a favorite on the system on the old network).

Oh well - thanks for your kind help.

You may want to call Sonos Support to discuss it. We in the public don’t have access to the same ‘hard’ data that they do.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

Incidentally, I have taken another Play3 from the house to my workshop, this will leave two in the house connected to older ADSL (all working fine).

To setup this 2nd one in the workshop (now that I have one all up and running) do I do a factory reset etc or is it simpler once at least on Play 3 has been setup?

Thx

If you’re changing networks (which you are), you should follow the instructions in the FAQ. Note, you’re not only changing networks, but systems (the speaker is no longer connected to the first network, but will be connected to the ‘new’ system).
