Play:1 Speaker connection issues after update

So after yet another update the loss of two of my speakers from my system and followed all procedures that seemed no to work I did the following for a full system reset.

you will need a network cable from home router

  • Power off and reset all speakers so they all drop off the app then power them off.
  • From Sonos app settings >switch system then >Set up a new system.
  • Connect the first speaker to the Router with a Network cable.
  • Get the app ready to add a speaker Press the play/pause & + buttons and power on until the light flashes white/orange.
  • From the app add select the add speaker follow the instructions from the app.
  • Once this has been added to the Sonos app get the next speaker ready but do not plug in the network cable.
  • Repeat the Power on reset process and add the speaker do not plug in the network cable just add to your wifi.
  • If the speaker failed at the speaker update part then from setting you should have the speaker you added but also another speaker that requires and update.
  • At this point plug in the network cable select that speaker and select Fix, and then follow the app on screen instructions.
  • Repeat this process for all of your Play:1 speakers

Network notes:

A network router when hard wired will show as your Wifi Network name, so if you have a different names Mesh Network you will need to be connected via Network cable to one of the Mesh routers.

e.g (BT-Network) Router box Name =BT-1234abc Wifi = BT-1234abc

Sonos App on your phone will need to be connected to the same network you set the Speakers on BT-1234abc

Hope this helps

Whilst I’m pleased for you that this process worked for you, I wouldn’t recommend it for most users.

Just a few points:

A factory reset deletes any data that Sonos support might have been able to use to discover why the update failed.

If just one speaker within a system has not updated, installing it in a new system means you are isolating it from the rest of your speakers, so you won’t be able to group it -or see it or control it - with your other devices.

I was unable to add the two speakers back into my system even after following the instructions,so I just flattened the lot and started again...

In every case Iam aware of the Sonos / network issue that arises after updates or power cycles is resolved by a basic network refresh.

Power down ALL Sonos, to include Bridges, Boosts and other non--speaker devices.

Power-cycle the router, give it a couple minutes to stabilize.

I also reboot the Controller, others think that is not necessary. Try both options before taking more drastic measures.

Power up one Sonos, if any are wired do one of them first, otherwise one near (but more than 3 feet away from) your router first.

This is a known and long-standing issue. It impacts select networks and that set may change based on updates, to routers is well confirmed, to Sonos only a possibility. On networks it impacts it isn't always consistent it may only happen a fraction of the time or every time. Many of us have spent hours looking at this, how much Sonos has spent is not discussed by Sonos, nobody has the answer to why.

There is an option to avoid the issue, no reason why it works just empirical evidence that it does. Assigned static/reserved IP addresses for ALL Sonos devices will work around the problem.
