Issues with Bell Homehub 400/Sagemcom Fast 5689 wifi

I’m at my wits end trying to find a set up that doesn’t just trade one issue for another.

I have the following sonos speakers: 2 Era 100, 1 Sonos:One, and 1 Roam.

Starting summer 2025, i started having issues where speakers would show on the sonos app, but i could not play on them either via airplay or the app. they’d show, but there would be no volume control either. It particularly affected the two Eras, then the Roam, and eventually started impacting the One as well.

On advice from Sonos, i bought a wireless extender/access point (TP Link RE315) to give the speakers a fixed access point. it was originally set up in extender mode, so had its own SSID (wifi-ext). To be able to airplay between devices without constant SSID (wifi and wifi-ext) switching on my phone and ipad, most things were moved to the new SSID (wifi-ext). this solved the issue, but started experiencing streaming issues on appletv due to fact the wifi speeds were cut in half due to wireless backhaul (that right?).

Sonos says the issue is with my ISP, my ISP says it’s not there’s to fix and that a different modem will cost $10/month. Is there a way to have one wifi network that enables airplay across all devices, but that keeps the Sonos speakers connected to the AP which is now connected to Sagemcom modem/router via ethernet? It’s been mentioned splitting the 2.4 GHz and 5 Ghz networks but that feels like would also cause useability issues (since sonos will be on 2.4 and appletv would be on 5).

If your ISP supplied device can be put in bridge/transparent mode you can then add a router/Wi-Fi device that works with Sonos.

So there’s no solution with my current equipment (Sagemcom 5689 modem/router, tp link re315 extender)?

I’m not familiar with Sagemcon, but the defaults for many ISP supplied gateways are trapped in the past and assume that access to external sites by computers and phones is the only use of their hardware. SONOS units need to chat with each other over the local network. This is how SONOS players stay synchronized with each other. Some ISP’s don’t seem to see any use for the user having the ability to tweak the defaults.

There may be a solution but you'll need advise from someone that knows that device. Since you had Sonos look at it and they said it was a problem odds are not good though.

Decent Wi-Fi-routers are fairly inexpensive and bring many other improvements over the ISP supplied gear.
