Hi, I have just submitted two support diagnostic reports, ********** and ***********, but the support is not opened during the weekend so I try here instead. The reports log situations where I have a dropout at one of the speakers (named Kök) during the last minute and that remained for about 10-15 seconds.

I have had problems with my system for quite a while now and have tested a number of things all according the suggestions in the chat forums, i.e.

  • Unplugged/rebooted router and Sonos device numbers of times

  • Set fixed IPs for all Sonos devices and checked for duplicated IP-addresses

  • Tested both Wireless client mode and SonosNet mode
(and later case I got the dropouts on the wired speaker?)

  • Use STP instead of RSTP

  • Removed 5G frequencies and running on 2.4G only

  • Checked the Wi-Fi conditions with Wi-Fi scanner during the dropouts and I can't se any issues

  • Locked Sonos devices and controller devices to the same AP

  • Configured the used AP to only use a specific channel (channel1 that has no interfering neighbors)

  • Tried to group i different constellation with the Play:1 that have larger memory (since the Play:5 gen 1 is only 32mb if I am correct)

  • I tried to capture the network matrix page but it sees like it isn't alible anymore

  • Tried to look at the traffic with Wireshark (with hop to find the cause of IP-storms etc) but with no luck

I know my system is a bit old, but I like it, and it would cost a quite large amount to replace it with a newer one. I have even considered to hardwire all my Sonos equipment, but since it is quite a bit of work I would like to know if it really would fix the problem.

Som background, I mainly use Spotify for streaming and my Sonos system consist of:

  • 3 Play:5 gen 1

  • 1 Play:1 gen 1

  • 1 Connect gen 1

My Wi-Fi systems consist of

  • 1 Unifi USG (4.4.57)

  • 1 Unifi US 8 60W (7.1.26)

  • 2 Unifi USW Flex Mini (2.1.0)

  • 1 Unifi AC LR (6.6.77) - This is the one that I have  connected all Sonos device to

  • 4 Unifi AC Mesh (6.6.77)

I feel that I have now reached the limit of my limited IP knowledge and would really need some help. If nothing else helps I am thinking about bying a few Wiim mini and use my Play:5s just speakers via the 3,5mm line in, anyone how have tested that?

Thanks in advance

Moderator edit: Diagnostics numbers recorded and removed

Hi @Per66

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Sorry to hear of this issue you are having with your Play:5 speaker having audio interruptions.

Thanks for the diagnostics - the “Kök” Play:5 is reporting a considerable amount of failed packets on the network, most likely due to interference.

If you have any other electrical devices within 1m (3 feet) of the speaker (I’m thinking mostly of devices that may utilise WiFi, but other devices can cause interference too), please move them away. If the speaker is in extreme proximity to a metal or glass surface, reflections of it’s own transmissions could be a cause of interference too. You will find more info on interference on our Reduce wireless interference help page.

I recommend that you do not select “Kök” first when grouping speakers - doing so will put it in charge of a group and responsible for redistributing music to other speakers - as it is a victim of interference, we want to minimise the amount of network traffic it uses, and the tasks that it has.

Finally, if there are WiFi devices close to your router or Access Points (within 1m/3 feet), I recommend that you move them away too.

I hope this helps.

Sorry to say, but I get exactly the same problem when I put the Play:5 directly beside the AP. I also talked to the Sonos phone support that redirected me to an expert in US, and his verdict was that the Play:5 had to little memory.

But I have problem in another way. I reconfigured all may Play:5s to act as “dumb” active speakers and bought a number of WiiM mini. This way I can reuse al my Play:5, that still is a pretty good speaker, and it works like a charm 😀

Close is not good, anything under about 3 feet / a meter and they start interfering with each other.

Sonos still is offering a really nice deal on updating older Sonos devices, 30% off the new gear and you can keep using the old stuff.

https://www.sonos.com/en-us/upgrade

Also keep in mind you can upgrade a Play 5 and then use the discount for any single item sold in the Sonos store. My one Play credit 5 turned into a full Arc/surround/Sub system.
