Could Sonos Fabric finally solve the Era 300 problem?

The ungoing rear speakers dilemma 

My Era 300s are fantastic as rear surrounds with my Arc and Sub. They’re also fantastic as a stereo pair for music. But moving between those two setups means removing them as surrounds, creating a stereo pair, running Trueplay again, and then reversing the whole process when I want my home theater back.

I’ve just read about Sonos Fabric and its Positioning Technology, and my first thought was: could this finally be the answer?

Sonos says compatible speakers will be able to recognize where they’ve been placed and change roles automatically. A Move 2 or Sonos Play can become a rear surround when it’s moved into position, without the owner having to rebuild the system manually.

I know this hasn’t been announced for the Era 300, and I understand the technical details may be different. But if Sonos is now building speakers that can change roles depending on how they’re being used, this feels like the perfect opportunity to revisit the Era 300.

What I’d love is very simple:

A Home Theater Mode that keeps the Arc, Sub, and Era 300s exactly as they are now.

A Music Mode that lets the Era 300s use all their drivers as a stereo pair, keeps the Sub available, and remembers a separate Trueplay tune.

Then one tap to switch back.

I dare to say this feature request is really high on Sonos owners' wish list.
Not only in the Sonos community, but also on Reddit and various forums, people wonder why this is not possible.

Consumers expect something like this from Sonos as well. Especially because it isn't a traditional company.  I find it such a shame that the Era 300 can still be utilized to its full potential right now when using them as a surround setup. 

It feels like I bought a Ferrari where you aren't allowed to press the accelerator.

This has been asked for so many times, hopefully Sonos has it on a priority list but past discussions here make it appear to be difficult to implement.

    Whilst I don't necessarily disagree that this would.be a very useful feature to have I do wonder why?

    If one has era 300's (or any other power wired pair) as correctly located surrounds then thier positions are going to be appalling for stereo reproduction. Unless that is one has a seat with its back to the TV/soundbar.

    I would have thought the reproduction from a full surround set up would be preferable?

    I think it also is a friction point for sales. Great for us customers to save money (although as you point out, it’s kind of a pain to move Era 300s, especially if they’re already attached to mounts), but restricts sales of speakers in general.

    It's a great question, and I've never really heard a good answer.  But I've come to the conclusion that it all boils down to the post by ​@Airgetlam above, i.e. it's a budget thing.  In my case, I bit the bullet and purchased a Five pair for my serious audio listening.  I've never regretted it.

      Similarly to ​@jgatie , I have a pair of PLAY:5 Gen 2s that flank my Arc for ‘serious’ music listening…but I also don’t tend to Atmos mixed music.

        Atmos music can be fun to hear, but I'm more of a purist.  If the original was mono, I want to hear it in mono; stereo in stereo, etc.

          Same, except they flank a Beam 2 by a few feet each side. They don’t disappoint.

            I have two Era-300 Pair Rooms and love the Atmos effects.

            The 300s as a Pair play what they are sent so a lot of older mixes are stereo.

            The sound difference in Play 5s or Fives and the 300s reminds me of the differences in conventional stereo speakers and omni-directional ones. Imaging / location on the 5 / Five is more precise but doesn't expand beyond the speaker width and the sweet spot is fairly small. The imaging doesn't seem as sharp, a bit wider perhaps? The image does expand beyond the speaker width and the image sweet spot is very large.

            Both options have their place and I've had two pairs of different speakers, one of each design, back when I was single.

              The “why” is, of course, personal. My setup is as shown in this image. Behind the sofa/Eras, there is a large dining table.

              When I’m sitting at the table with my family on a nice evening, or when we have people over, I’d simply like to be able to turn the stands around so that the Era 300s can direct the sound towards the table.

              At the moment, that means I first have to change the setup in the Sonos app. And when I want to use them again as surrounds, I have to set up the entire system all over again, including Trueplay.

              That’s why I’d really like the option to simply switch the Era 300s between these two orientations without having to reconfigure the whole setup every time.

              Try setting the HT Room's Surrounds to "Full" instead of "Ambient" mode and spinning them around will give you the sound you want for streaming sources.

              I have!  

              However, the front drivers remain disabled when the Ers 300 is used in a surround configuration. The music is better in Full mode instead of Ambient. Still you don’t get the full capacity as when the Era 300 are a stereo pair.
