Question

connectivity on new Spectrum WIFI

Just left CenturyLink for Spectrum. This fixed the business related issues I was having with upload speed and video conferencing but wrecked my Sonos system’s functionality. I’ve had a perfectly working system supporting 10 different Sonos products throughout my house on CenturyLink for years, bragged about how amazing Sonos was, etc., but now, it’s all just a memory. About half of my Sonos products are constantly dropped from the app, nothing is reliable to the point I have just given up. That effortless quality is gone. I’ve talked with Spectrum support, tried their recommendations but to no avail. From research, seems like a mesh router, in particular eero 6+, may be the answer. Has anyone else had a similar experience and this was the fix?

Spectrum is not good with Sonos, see

I do not see a Spectrum branded router on this list though: https://support.sonos.com/en/article/incompatible-network-hardware

There is an incompatible hardware list in the support section here.

I'd suggest putting your Spectrum in bridge/transparent mode and getting a quality router, not just for Sonos but it will likely help your whole local network.

In the face of the evidence presented by @Stanley_4 and @106rallye I’ll have to agree that Spectrum is most likely a bad choice. Especially so as everything was working fine until you switched.

You can as @Stanley_4 suggested place the Spectrum router side of the equipment into Bridge Mode. Your input speed coming via the Spectrum modem will not change (i.e. the plan you are paying for).

However, my advice in selecting a router is to acquire one that is Wi-Fi 6 or no less than Wi-Fi 5. The Eero mesh is good choice wherein you’ll have a main router connected to the Spectrum modem and 1 or 2 satellites placed in your home to expand Wi-Fi coverage. Things you want to do:

  1. Unplug all Sonos then setup your router
  2. Give all bands the same SSID. Preferably the one you were using with Sonos before you switched over to Spectrum.
  3. Use the same password that Sonos already knows.
  4. Disable Airtime Fairness
  5. Disable any type of “smart” connect wherein the router assigns the Wi-Fi band (2.4Ghz or 5Ghz) let Sonos choose the band.
  6. Delete the Sonos App from your device
  7. Connect your device to Wi-Fi
  8. Re-install the Sonos App
  9. Plug-in your Sonos and let them come back
  10. If you are able to use a Wi-Fi  “Password” that Sonos is already familiar with select “Join and Existing system
  11. If not able to follow step #10 you’ll have to factory reset all Sonos and setup a new system

 * If you followed instructions in this link you may have to use the password you recently created with Spectrum for Sonos.

Thanks, all, you’ve confirmed my research…I need to spend some more money🙄. Spectrum may have given me needed upload speed but it sure put Sonos into chaos. Time for a new router. Appreciate the step by step, @AjTrek1!

Before you rush out to spend money (and you may have to, unfortunately), be sure that you’ve refreshed the Sonos network connections. Any time you switch a router, it’s a good idea to do this for all devices, not just the Sonos.

Unplug all your Sonos devices from power. Then reboot the router. Wait two minutes, then plug back in the Sonos devices. Wait another two minutes, then do your testing.

This possibly may fix the connection issues you’re experiencing.
