I read a lot in this community about factory resets.  Mostly negative responses to those who factory reset to attempt to resolve an issue.  I totally agree.  My plan is to purchase a friend’s ERA 300.  Is there a procedure that does not require a factory reset to get the 300 to join my system?

Your friend should do a reset before they sell it to you, so it removes it from their system. Be patient, it takes a few minutes to complete.

This process will delete registration information, content saved to My Sonos, and content services from a Sonos product. This is commonly done before transferring ownership to another person. Your Sonos app may also recommend that you go through this process if it can't find your product during setup. If you wish to erase data from multiple Sonos products, you will need to perform these steps on each of them.

No.  Purchasing used units that were previously in another system is the only user initiated reset that should ever be required.  As long as you are only resetting the newly purchased unit, you should be fine.

The bad stories you hear about resetting stem from the fact that it is basically useless, doing nothing that a reboot won’t do, and it is destructive, erasing both account info (services, playlists, favorites, etc.) and diagnostic information.

After the Factory Reset you will “Add” the unit to your system.

Music service registrations, Music library, Playlists, and ownership details are stored in each player. Unless the transferred unit is Factory Reset, there will be messy conflicts as the newly purchased system is merged with your current system.

Are you hoping to retain some of the settings on the Era 300 for some reason?

There are very few reasons to factory reset, aside from cleaning up a speaker for selling it.

I think there are more but the search tool isn't helping.

Bottom line, as said, avoid factory resets unless Sonos tells you to do them. Although I seem to recall a discussion of an incorrect suggestion in the app somwhere.

No.  I want to start fresh.

The first thing I always do, when purchasing/receiving a second hand speaker, is a factory reset. I have no understanding of what the previous owner did with the device….even if it’s a resale at Best Buy. I’d much rather make my own mistakes, and not inherit other people’s misconfigurations.
