Hi everyone,

I have never used a sonos product before but wondering if to invest in these with them being released so long ago? From my understanding they should all work with the s2 sonos app?

3 x Sonos Play 1s (nearly new - £225 for all)

1 x Sonos play 5 (nearly new £240)

I am very aware these are old products so want to make sure it is not money down the drain on a system which will be infuriating to use due to the age or anything to be aware of which will catch me out ?

I currently have a Denon system but it is only a 2.0.

My plan is to potentially use the play 5 in the living room just for music when I have the other speakers playing in other rooms. Or I could just get another play 1 when one pops up in the used market in good condition .

Have seen some WiFi issues reported on thr play 5 also which makes me a bit cautious.

Are they good value at this price point?

Appreciate any help!

Thanks

This link shows which speakers are compatible with the latest Sonos App (S2).  Make sure the Play 5 is not Gen1.

As far as investing….well they are used. However, even a new Sonos can go defective just as any other product on the market. The difference being a new Sonos is under warranty and Sonos now offers via 3rd party extended warranties (at cost).

Cost:

  • Play:1’s are not nearly new. They are 3 generations old. However, the price for all 3 is reasonable IMO.
  • Play:5 is a bit on the high side. 45% -50% of current retail would be better IMO.

Understand I’m converting cost to USD.

I can confirm that they will work with the current App.

The issues that people experience varies from user to user. I have seen posts attributing some issues to older products like this but my 1s and 5 have been pretty stable. Most of my issues have been with my newer speakers.

I think that the 5 is a great music player. Some seem to prefer the Era 300 from the current range but personally I am not tempted by the “upgrade”.

I anticipate getting a few more years out of my 1s and 5.

I paid £129 for Play:1 in 2019, 6 years ago. Upgraded to Era-100s, and sold Play:1s for £55-60 on eBay in 2025. Cost of ownership ~£1 per month per speaker. I would say £220 for 3 is quite high. I would aim for £180-£200 for the Play:5 g2

In theory, if you buy ‘new’ smart speakers you will get 10+ years of service (based on Sonos speakers from 2013 are still supported).

If you buy ‘used’ smart speakers that are 10+ years old, I doubt you will get another 10+ years of service from the ‘used’ speakers.

@question2025

This is a follow-up to my previous post….

Regarding Play 1’s and this won’t change my recommendation. Often people confuse Play:1 with Sonos One. The later having two generations. So if the seller is selling Sonos One’s the selling price is still a good deal and you’re getting more value for your investment.

To be clear there are people using Play:1’s and Play 5’s to this day. Sonos still supports them in terms of security updates. Sonos will in most cases offer a 15% to 30% discount towards the purchase of current models in the event an out of warranty Play:1, Play:5 or Sonos One might fail. *

 * The discount offering assumes the original owner hasn’t claimed it and is now just trying to sell the speaker. In that case the purchaser (of the used gear) would not be able to claim the discount in the event the speaker fails.
