The analog Line-In introduces a 75ms buffer delay to accommodate streaming to other rooms and is not suited for a video source.  Only the HDMI-ARC input is made for video.

Thank you jgatie...so if I have a 2nd room on the same system with a sonos connect amp and passive speakers, will the hdmi arc from the tv in the 2nd room system work ok?

Directly connected to the ARC or eARC TV output the Amp(s) will be in sync with the connected TV. Multiple Rooms are not a problem until you get to 30 some ---  edit, devices not Rooms.

Grouping another Room to the directly connected Amp, the Grouped Room will be delayed the 75 ms.

Not sure what ‘30 some Rooms’ really means.

The Sonos delay will be in effect on any analog line in, as @jgatie suggests, the only input for audio to sync with video is via ARC or eARC (usually handled by the electronics in the TV, not usually associated with a computer’s output). Any Sonos ‘room’ grouped with that ARC or eARC ( or optical connection for the Sonos PLAYBAR or PLAYBASE) will have that 75 ms delay associated with the sound in the extra room(s). Just no real delay on the Sonos speaker designed for TV (not computer) connection.

Sorry, I thought I recalled a limit of around 30 Rooms in a Sonos Household.

Ah, I see. But ‘all rooms’ other than the original (ARC/eARC/optical connected ) one will have the 75ms delay, as Sonos buffers the content to play on (the worst case) Internet connections. The delay is inherent to the way Sonos’ software works for distribution.

The limit is 32 devices. A “Room” can include multiple devices, such as a stereo pair or a soundbar, surrounds, and subwoofers.

The HDMI-ARC connection will sync audio with any video device connected to the HDMI-ARC port.  Any room “grouped” (“grouped” in quotes to signify Sonos’ definition of “grouping”*) to that room will be delayed 75ms to facilitate the wireless transmission between rooms/floors etc.

*Sonos definitions:

  1. Grouping - Non-permanent, on-the-fly connection of 2 or more rooms to play the same source.  Grouped rooms play the source in stereo or mono only, even for TV sources, which play a downmix of all channels and have a delay of 75ms.
  2. Bonding: Bonding is the semi-permanent linking of a subwoofer or surrounds to a soundbar or speaker(s).  Each bonded unit will play a separate channel of the 2.1 or 5.1/Atmos signal.  The bond is a proprietary 5GHZ direct connection between the soundbar/Amp/speaker(s) and the other units.
  3. Pairing: Pairing is a bond that links two speakers as the left/right channel of a stereo pair.  Each plays a unique channel in the stereo signal.

Thanks jgatie for the clarification...

That’s usually caused by audio processing latency from the Sonos Amp when used with a computer source instead of TV ARC/eARC. TVs handle AV sync correction automatically much better, while PCs often don’t, so try reducing audio buffering/latency settings on the computer and make sure the Sonos input delay is set to “Low” in the app.

Used with an analogue source. Computers using HDMI-ARC or optical will be in sync.
