Question

Teams audio keeps cutting out using Move 2 as a PC speaker with line-in.

The issue with sound cutting out is specific to Teams. It can happen while the other person is speaking. If I open the app on my phone, I can tell the speaker to start playing the line-in signal again; but it seems to cut out again as soon as my phone locks.

  • Audio Delay is set to minimum. Pretty much a requirement for PC sound and essential for Teams, or the other person will hear an echo of their voice.
  • At the suggestion of the support chatbot, I set the line in sound to compressed, rather than automatic. Did not fix it - may even have made it worse.
  • Source level is set to high, which gives better volume control; but had the same problem at 8 (Portable Player, PC).
  • Happens with and without an Autoplay volume set.
  • Turning off Teams noise suppression does not help.

The speaker is connected via the headphone output of a dock. The dock is used by multiple laptops, so Bluetooth is not an option. Speaker shows as Dell USB Audio - it’s a Dell dock (USB 3).

Anyone else had the same issue (and ideally found the solution)?

If you do adjust the line-in ‘audio delay’ feature to the higher setting of Medium, High or Max, does that actually fix the issue? - if it does, then it’s likely the cable, or something in between the source and speaker causing the issue or the type of audio being sent. You could try power-cycling things and changing the cables etc. and/or seeing if the Teams App or PC can reduce the audio quality to see if that ‘might’ solve things for you.

Yes, use a Sonos soundbar, eg Ray, with a optical USB converter. You wont satisfactorily solve the delay problem with line-in or Bluetooth inputs to Sonos speaker.

This would suggest the Move2 is also paired with phone via Bluetooth?

You mentioned issues when your screen locked, disable that and see if things work better.

If so look to your phone's power management or security settings to see if they are causing the problem.

Thanks for the various suggestions.

  • Adjusting the delay creates a worse problem, but the the cable is brand new, official Sonos line-in adapter. And the problem only happens wih Teams calls.
  • Spent quite a lot on this speaker, which fits my use case and the space. Not going to buy another and nowhere to put a Ray here anyway. The one I have as a PC speaker at home does indeed work perfectly.
  • Don’t think I have ever used the Move with BT and it is set to line-in in he app. Just keep having to press play on that input when it cuts out.
  • Shouldn’t have to be doing anything with the phone at all. Just a way I found to get the sound going again. The locking and the cut out could be unrelated/coincidental.

Have ordered an external soundcard to connect the line-in to. Hopefully that might give a more stable output.

The Sonos Line-in is not meant for real-time synched audio, including audio from a PC.  It is buffered for multi-room streaming, and therefore delayed by 75 ms at a minimum for the buffer to be built up in real time.  Using the Line-in for computer audio, DJing, public address, musical instruments or any other type of real-time audio is just not advisable, and you are better off using something that is fit for purpose.

From the Sonos page advertising the Move 2:

Line-in

Unlock new listening possibilities

Connect a turntable, computer, or other audio source using an auxiliary cable and the Sonos Line-In Adapter.

Move 2: Bluetooth & WiFi Portable Home Speaker - Sonos

A 75ms delay is virtually unnoticeable.

Connecting a SoundBlaster Play! 3 USB card to the dock did the trick.
