Today we are introducing the most extensive app redesign ever, creating an unprecedented streaming experience that allows listeners to organize their favorite playlists, stations, albums and more from over 100 services on one customizable Home screen.

Β

Home Screen

The new Home screen provides faster access to Sonos system controls with one easy swipe up, making tab to tab jumping a thing of the past. As a leader in sound experience that’s focused on creating a better way to listen, Sonos intentionally redesigned the app on a modern software platform for an easier, faster and better experience that can support more rapid innovation.

Β

The reimagined app supports all existing S2 products and will be available globally through a software update for the S2 mobile app.

Β

100+ streaming services, one Home screen

The redesigned Sonos app prioritizes a listening experience that’s human - allowing you to bring your true favorites front and center and giving you more control to make your streaming experience your own.

Β

  • Get into your music (and off the app) faster: No need to tap between tabs β€” the new Home screen serves up all your favorite content and controls, all in one place. Quickly jump back into your recently played, browse libraries and recommendations from your preferred services, and fill your home with music and all the sounds you love.
  • Customize and curate: Enjoy unparalleled curation by designing your Home screen to reflect how you listen. Pin rows of your favorite content and services; then move, edit, or rearrange them to your liking.
  • Search every streaming library: Look for an artist, song, podcast, or audiobook across all your preferred streaming apps at once via an easy-to-use search bar that’s always available right on your Home screen.
  • Elevated system control: Swipe up from the bottom of your Home screen to seamlessly control your entire system and access a visual overview of what’s playing on each of your products, quickly group speakers, and dial in on the perfect volume from anywhere in the app.Β

Β

Accessible from any modern web browser, a brand new web app allows listeners the same seamless system control as the mobile app.

Β

The new Web App

The Web AppΒ will be available alongside the redesigned mobile app on May 7, 2024.

Β

I’ve been a Sonos user for over 20 years. Β I even bit the bullet and upgraded some speakers when they screwed us all over when they decided to no longer support our older speakers. Β This lastest β€œupdate” sucks more thanΒ the upgraded speakers they forced us in to buying. Β I can’t clear my queue from my iPhone or iPad? Β I’m getting constantly bumped out of my own system and my local hard drive is gone. Β I’ve had it with Sonos…it should called Suckos now

Being in software & productΒ myselfΒ I appreciate the complexity of rolling out a big update but not as much as I appreciate the importance of extensive QA and listening to the users and, I’m sorry to say, this update is a major fail.

Was it rolled out just to meet a deadline?! Surely this cannot have been properly tested, the core/basic feature set completed and user interviews done to gather feedback before rolling outΒ such a poor β€œupgrade”! Smells like shiny object syndrome to me, focusing on a UI update at the expense of UX and actual core functionality.

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned by other users, but further to some of the issues people mentioned here my Google Assistant is bricked on my Sonos devices. They’re trying to push their new Sonos Voice Assistant, which they’re entitled to offer, but since the update my Google Assistant stopped working. No matter what I try (setting it up again, unlinking Sonos/Google, rebooting, you name it) I have not been able to get it back whatsoever.

I’ve loved our Sonos products over the years and was considering buying a few more recently but this single update has made me think of selling them allΒ and looking for an alternative instead. What a disaster…

I really hope they roll this back asap before their users start jumping ship and I truly feel bad for the good people at Sonos who built amazing speakers that are not involved in their software who will suffer from this.

I am a software dev as well and i agree with rfd completely. This updated up needs to be rolled back immediately, and possibly offered parallel to the original S2 app. There is too much missing functionality ( UX ) that the system is useless without multiple tries and multiple devices. Unacceptable for a system that costs $1000s to put together. If they had an open API then they can certainly do what they want, but thats closed also. Bad form Sonos. You did not learn from your S1 to S2 upgrade. Local control is king, and pushing everything through your cloud creates a bad UX experience, the system is much less responsive, and control disappears when the internet is down. Roll back now!

Ahh .. pushing everything to the cloud and not running locally is probably what broke mine before I reverted back to the old APK... I have a ton of network restrictions on my network and I don't just let anything go out. Makes sense... The new app just hung and hung ..never got it to work. Also maybe why people can't search their local libraries too.Β

I’ve only ever had Sonos S2 but after using the latest update for a few days I actually went to the App Store and downloaded Sonos S1 to see if it’s any better. That’s how bad the latest release of S2 is, I’ll try anything else rather than submit to that crappy interface.Β

Would Sonos please explain why they rushed out this awful update AND when we can expect a return to the useful features many of us used (eg queue management, playlist management, sleep timer ....)

It'sΒ here.

Where the alarm gone?! Crazy to remove such a key feature. Now stuck waking up to the same music every day and no way to modify alarms or set up new ones! Crazy for developers to miss such a key feature out.

How can you release a new app with so many bugs and disabling fuctions and not even providing an update to fix those bugs?? Alarm clocks and sleep timer just gone. Really frustrating. Reverse those terrible mistakes immediately

Why doesn’t everybody take a breath and hold off until the app is released before panicking?Β

Can we panic now?Β

Adding to the multiude of replies.

What on earth!!

New new app is so confusing and not intuitive at al, never mind the regression on features

Fortunately I have other devices and a desktop app that I can use instead

These are my priorites to bring back

  1. Queue management - I use add to queue/replace all of the time - Why on earth remove one of the best features of Sonos?
  2. Search on local library - All of my music is on my local NAS drive.Β  Not everyone streams!
  3. Favourities - I numbered these so they are in the order I want them, not A>Z.Β  Why on earth order these on most recently added - That makes no sense

Β

Given the strength of feeling out there, Sonos, you need to put some public messaging out there; like you did with the mess over S1 and S2.Β  This new app is a disaster

I’m the type of Sonos user, who hasn’t been inconvenienced significantly by the new app- not many of us have been vocal in this thread .

Β I use streaming services- Apple, Tidal - for most of my music. I do have some local music on a NAS, but also use Plex so can find tracks easily. I don’t use alarms/ timers.Β

I miss being able to queue up tracks, but can wait for it to be fixed; I’ll create playlists in the streaming services if needed.

I used to go to β€˜about my System’ to see if I was receiving atmos, but that doesn’t show now. Hopefully that is on a future feature list

I’d like to be able to sequence all streaming services, not just one+ alphabeticalΒ

so my overall experience is positive. I prefer the new user experience. And after following the comments here, I’ve discovered SonoPhone so I have a great alternative app too.Β

Β

Β

I’ve read most of the posts in this thread over the last few days and was threatened with a ban by one of the mods for an intemperate outburst to another user that was trying to tell us all to calm down.Β
Β

One thing that does cross my mind would be to advise everyone to disable automatic firmware updates on their systems. I wouldn’t put it past Sonos to push out an update to the devices that makes them not work with the last versions of the S2 apps. Then they would have the perfect excuse to say that they cannot re-publish the old versions in the app stores.Β
Β

I have zero trust in Sonos execs since this debacle started.Β

Β

Great Idea.. but i cant find the option to actually open system updates on the new app…

what a mess

Most extensive? This is the worst app update ever. Useful features are gone, no widget, my playlists are missing , volume doesn't show the numbers, etc., etc. I dislike this and will look for another sound system.Β

From the home screen, click the gear icon at the top right: -

Β

Manage

System updates

Then disable the β€œupdate automatically” option.

This quite simply has to be the worst app release I have ever experienced. So much functionality that we use(d) daily has gone, such as adding to playlists, timers, etc, etc, etc, it has all already been said.

SONOS - wake up, this is the second time you have gained terrible press and business impact with a release, sort this out ASAP for goodness sake!

It'sΒ here.

The we fell shortΒ comment in that link is ridiculous. Removing key features and claiming they fell short is an insult. Few welcome change but they've made what was an intuitive app that has, certainly for me, been running flawlessly for the past 12+ months, a cumbersome and sluggish experience. I've read a few possible excuses (new headphones; investors) but I've never known a company remove key features from an app and then issue a statement saying they'll be returning in a few weeks time. They've called it "courageous" and I agree. A courageous act of self-sabotage. Fortunately I have the old app still up and running on my phone, for the time being at least and will keep it for as long as possible. The review rating on Play Store for the app has tanked from 3.3 to 2.1 stars since the update.

This courageous new app is the SONOS equivalent of BREXIT πŸ˜πŸ˜œπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

You just have to BELIEVE and it'll be a wonderful success.Β

I listen to a lot of different radio stations around the world. Now more than half of the radio stations stopped playing. Sonos please give me my money back and keep the lousy app to yourself😑

Save your trolling and poor attempts at humour for another day, or take it elsewhere. Few things worse than a boring troll, except for this latest Sonos app.

Rating on the play store has now fallen below 2,0… This an amazing fall within less than a week.Β

Now the question is - how low will it go? Any bets?Β

BRING BACK THE OLD WORKING VERSION !!!! Even with a different name and continue working on this new version to make it work FULLY as soon as possible.

Dude, I don't live in the UK, didn't vote for or against Brexit and it has no impact on my life. You need to take this nonsense to a Brexit related site or forum.

For God's sake give it a rest. Take your political comments elsewhere.
