Hey all! This morning, we deployed an update for iOS and Android. See below for a summary of what's changed. If you'd like a look at what has changed over the last few months, check out our App Release Notes here, as well as our System (Player) Release Notes here.

As with most updates, this will be a Phased Rollout, which means that you may (or may not) get the update or features pushed to your system. Some iOS users have sidestepped this in the past, by going directly to the App Store. If you still do not see the update, try refreshing the App Store by pulling down (as if you were refreshing a page) on the Account page that shows all your pending app updates.

What’s New

Android & iOS - 83.00.36

  • Quickly access EQ controls when changing volume with the new EQ Shortcut. Enable this in App Preferences.

  • Content services can now provide additional options in the “More” menu across the Sonos app.

    • Browse by artist or album

    • Start Radio for a similar artist or album

    • Create or edit a playlist within the content service

Note: These options will differ based on the music service being used.

iOS only- 83.00.36

  • Adjust the volume from anywhere on the slider for easier control, especially at lower volume levels.

As always please don’t hesitate to share your feedback (about the new features or anything else), as we genuinely appreciate it!

Wow, at last! 😀

Also, the icons have changed to reflect the actual players in group volume control, rather than generic icons.

Just updated on Android and BBC showing program art on play - hurrah fixed…

Stopped and restarted playing the program and program art reverted back to the generic icon - harrumph not fixed…

Anyone any idea what could cause this? I have never had BBC program art since the new app two years ago, fine on PC and Phonos apps needless to say...

Question about the EQ shortcut - I have 2 Android phones which have both been updated. 1 shows the setting to turn this on. The other does not. Does that mean the other phone will have this feature ‘switched on’ in the future?

SarahN, The phased availability and then phased activation are not documented well enough to give a proper answer.

Probably yes.

Probably yes.

Hoping a Sonos staff member can just clarify this for us :)

Hi @SarahN

Does that mean the other phone will have this feature ‘switched on’ in the future?

Yes, exactly this.

In the interest of simply saying as much as I know, if someone (not you, as you have the feature on one device already) has a DNS blocker like Pi-Hole or AdGuard on their network (or a similar feature built into their router’s software) that blocks access to optimizely.com, they may never see the feature (or other new features in the future) until whitelisting optimizely.com or until opening the Sonos app while the DNS blocking software is temporarily disabled, at least.

This is because although the feature is coded into the new version of the app that you now have on both devices, the visibility of the feature in the app is controlled by a flag, as set by the Optimizely service. It is currently on a limited roll-out, so not all controllers (apps) will have it visible immediately after the update.

I hope this helps.

Edit: Explanation of Optimizely added.

So I just keep checking the other phone to see if it’s there from time to time?

Pretty much, @SarahN, though I’d only bother every couple of days - I don’t think the stages are particularly close to each other.

Also, you may want to refresh your page - I added a bit to my reply above. 😁

It would make sense to only update one, if the update breaks one device, the other device will still work? 😀

I’m guessing the staged roll out is based on % of specifics, if you match the specifics (eg phone/tablet device type, OS version) but maybe Sonos has only decided to roll out to 10% of that criteria, then you could be lucky and all your devices are updated, but also neither updated. Then Sonos will ramp up the 10% to say 50%, and then more likely that one or more devices will be updated, ie its a % of devices that match a defined criteria that Sonos would set. If no major issues the 50% is ramped up to 100%.

Sonos customers should refer to https://www.sonos.com/en/legal/privacy, as this the agreement Sonos customers agree to when installing the App.

The Optimizely privacy statement will be between Sonos & Optimizely.

I like the haptic feedback (is that the term?) for the volume slider on android, compared to before, a much better finer control

The layout is nice, plus the EQ shortcut is great.

Well I like it. Nice work Sonos.
