Changes to volume mapping and impact on Sub output

Thank you for your feedback regarding the recent 14.12 software update with Enhanced Clarity for Arc

In this update, we made a change to Arc’s audio profile to improve dialogue clarity and the overall sound experience. This change is based on feedback from our listeners in the field and brings Arc in line with our other Home Theater products, resulting in a more accurate representation of the sound as intended by the content creator.

The updated tuning adjusts the spectral balance of Arc+Sub to achieve a more accurate representation of the sound and an improved sound experience. While the Arc+Sub output capability remains the same,  the mapping of volume across the 0-100% range has been adjusted with this release which means low and mid volume levels are relatively lower compared to the previous tuning so you may need to adjust the volume slider to achieve your pre-update volume level. The maximum volume and bass output are unchanged. We acknowledge that this change was not made more clear in the release notes and in the future we’ll be sure to make sure we communicate these rare changes more effectively.

Please note, we have identified an issue for some users of Arc, Beam and Ray whose configuration includes a Sub (with or without surrounds), who may find their Sub output is lower than desired after performing a new Trueplay tuning.

Users with Beam or Ray bonded with Sub can increase the Sub level for a more powerful low-end response, however this won’t have the same impact for Arc users. Customers using Arc bonded with a Sub (and/or surrounds) who find their Sub output is lower than desired following performing a new Trueplay tuning, should temporarily disable Trueplay on Arc until this is addressed by an upcoming software update.

Trueplay tunings for Home Theater configurations without a bonded Sub are unaffected, including standalone soundbars and those bonded with surrounds only.

Moderation edit:

With the 14.18 software update, the above mentioned issues have been addressed, and the Enhanced Clarity for Arc adjustments are retained. There was a clear preference within our community for the previous volume settings, and these have been restored. This will be apparent immediately after updating to 14.18. The Trueplay issue has been fixed. Customers who experienced a lower Sub level after performing Trueplay after updating to 14.12 will need to update their systems and then perform a new Trueplay tuning in order to address these improvements in their system. Customers will hear a more powerful low end response, meaning any Sub level adjustments made after 14.12 should no longer be required.

People saying in the Sonos group on FB that 14.14 sound like 14.10 but my system still sucks like 14.12

Did trueplay 3 times with both iPhone/iPad

Sounds better with trueplay off but still doesnt sound good :/

It definitely doesn’t sound like 14.10

Sound is not as nearly as punchy and the sub is completely dead unless you raise the volume way too much.

I was just on a support call with Sonos, and I’ve been told that this 14.14 update was for some other things, and doesn’t inlude fix for Arc+Sub 😮

That’s really unfortunate and frustrating

Good post. My thought is when Sonos do roll out something that directly addresses the issues, we will see a thread or post  similar to this very thread marked “STICKY F.A.Q.14.XX  or 15.XX UPDATE”

Maybe they are not planning to fix the issue and hoping all this will blow over at some day 😂

Everyone should spread the word and warn their friends who want to buy a new soundbar that they must avoid Sonos at all cost. You’ll spare them years of endless suffering and one of the worst customer services in history.

I bought my sonos two weeks ago, I bought it based on good reviews on the Internet, I don’t know how it sounded at 14.10, but the sound at 14.12 wasn’t particularly impressive, I listened to the samsung hw-q900a in the store and was impressed by it, but I thought the sonos would sound better, it turned out that this is not the case, possibly due to the fact that I have not yet bought a subwoofer. I even think that the speakers on my tv LG G2 sound better and loudly than the sonos arc

You’re lucky you can send yours back. I’m stuck with mine 😢

I am a new Sonos customer. I’ve been using the Sonos Arc/Sub Gen 3/One SL system for a couple of months now. I’m coming from a series of traditional home cinema setups the last one a Yamaha receiver, B&W speakers combination. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a soundbar system but I was really impressed. The system is in a small home cinema room with acoustic treatment, dimensions (3.8mx4.5m, height 2.6m). The sound was crisp, detailed, immersive with good bass. But since 14.12, i will not say completely ruined but performance is definitely worse. Sound is muddier, sub not as present, surround sometimes overwhelm. There was no issue with dialogue before and I can’t tell if it improved to be honest. I felt sound signature with 14.10 was special but not anymore.

Is it really that difficult to listen to the majority???

Is it really that difficult to listen to the majority???

No, it shouldn’t be. But in this case, it’s on purpose. They have no intention of keeping their customers happy.

Since I have installed 14.12 my system (ARC + Generation 3 Sub + 2 SL Ones) is no longer being used.  The sound quality is awful.  It is now a $2,000+ Yugo!   The ARC sounds tinny...the sub sounds distorted and the surrounds…  You’ve gotten the message.  In the last 12 months their stock has gone down over 58%.  Perhaps they have created the 14.12 to destroy the company.  Perhaps someone has “shorted” the stock and is trying to make money as a result of 14.12.  Remember “Springtime for Hitler”?  Anyone have any thoughts on how to get Sonos to fix the problem, now? Class action lawsuit?  Post on YouTube a video showing me burning my system?

If you look at the frequency of firmware update, I think this update is more of a monthly scheduled release done by Sonos. I updated my system(Arc+Sub+one sl) and I see improvement in the sound profile compared to 14.12, sub response has improved as well but not as it was with 14.10. Trueplay is not patched yet, Sub sounds better with trueplay off. I guess we have no other choice but to wait for one more month with the fix :(

Sonos why release 14.14 that has done NOTHING!! ??

What happened to 14.13? Lol something astray there!!

Yesterday i factory reset all of my Sonos speakers and boost. I removed everything from the app, uninstalled it and then set everything up again from scratch hoping for a fix.
I started with the boost (so everything was on an independent network) I then added just two SL Ones and the Sub, to see if it was the ark messing everything up. The answer is No, the Sub does not sound the same even without the ark. It has been tamed. Something has been done to its sound signature.
I then added the arc and made the SL Ones the surrounds. No improvement in Bass.

I have had to set loudness to On, adjust the Sub by +8, and set the Arc Bass at +8 with treble at +6 to get a hint of rumbling Bass, but it is muddy as hell !!

You have definitely modified the Sub independent of the sound bar …. or you have created a bug that affects many of us. Personally i couldn’t care for your Arc. I sold my Beam to buy it and have also regretted it as the arc was a hell of an investment for what is frankly a little increase in sound when comparing the two. Perhaps that’s what you are trying to do… make the arc sound better than the beam to try boost sales? I bought my system and the Sub for the great sound signature and amazing Bass. You have robbed me of this in one lousy update.

I have not tuned trueplay. So sonos you have broken the sound with trueplay dis activated/ OFF.

Stupidly i bought into Apple so as to have trueplay. Another let down from your behalf.

With your new update an immediate problem was my Move was removed from the wifi network and it would not reconnect. The app would just stick/bug at the connection. The factory reset has fixed this.

I have wasted another evening messing about with what i call a broken system and now writing this to help others in my case and put the message across again.

As i previously said, i didn’t buy this system to have to wait for updates to fix something that shouldn’t have been broken. Why do we have to wait so long for it to be fixed? Why force customers to update their systems without giving them the proper details of what you have done. Your update was obviously not fully tested either. You are playing with customers and their rights. I for sure will never be investing in your products again.

I had no problems with sound or anything else until you FORCED 14.12 on us.

I struggle to understand how it can take such a big company more than a month to make an update to fix this. You are creating bad publicity for yourselves (check out youtube and google it) although looking at this thread you’ve not replied once so i doubt you care.

If you care, fix this or at least allow those that had had 14.10 to return to this software…..or return their products for a substantial refund. We no longer have the product we originally bought.

With all the complaints and so many dissatisfied with the recent updates we would expect a C Level executive to make an official statement :-(

Sonos likely recalibrated the speech volume due to multiple feedbacks, and I have volume up/down to reduce explosive sounds at times, however, when you sell thousands of units you will always get certain segments that prefer more Center, more Bass etc. Instead of having a one size fit all solution, they should give users more ability to use a default setting or an adjustment for each speaker in the system. In particular a +/- for Center stage? Wonder how complicated is that when cheap headphones provides such functions……

Another person in the same boat. Their bigger competitor ruined the outdoor speakers by performing firmware update, so I immediately migrated to sonos. Bought 2 Move speakers and was impressed by the sound. After that Arc with sub and the problems started. Other than the trueplay problem, i find my Arc ultra quiet when watching tv channels with MPEG audio. The volume is almost at max level. When watching With DD sound everything is normal as volume level. The summer is almost gone so instead of impressing myself with the fidelity of sonos sound and enjoying the music with my friends at our summer house, i switched back to traditional speakers. It’s a huge disappointment for me. The best advertising for a company are the customers, and we are not happy at all. I hope they will fix it ASAP.

13 is unlucky. My street doesn’t have a number 13.

I am still on 14.8 app version and system version but I got a pop up saying my trueplay was wiped. If indeed it was wiped and I retune I shouldn't be affected by the 14.12 problems right?

If you click on their profile, it says “Retired Community Manager”, but it used to say just “Community Manager” previously. Maybe that’s how they figured out that?

Edit: Their LinkedIn profile says that they indeed have left Sonos. Hope someone else has been assigned to communicate on this.
