Changes to volume mapping and impact on Sub output
Thank you for your feedback regarding the recent 14.12 software update with Enhanced Clarity for Arc.
In this update, we made a change to Arc’s audio profile to improve dialogue clarity and the overall sound experience. This change is based on feedback from our listeners in the field and brings Arc in line with our other Home Theater products, resulting in a more accurate representation of the sound as intended by the content creator.
The updated tuning adjusts the spectral balance of Arc+Sub to achieve a more accurate representation of the sound and an improved sound experience. While the Arc+Sub output capability remains the same, the mapping of volume across the 0-100% range has been adjusted with this release which means low and mid volume levels are relatively lower compared to the previous tuning so you may need to adjust the volume slider to achieve your pre-update volume level. The maximum volume and bass output are unchanged. We acknowledge that this change was not made more clear in the release notes and in the future we’ll be sure to make sure we communicate these rare changes more effectively.
Please note, we have identified an issue for some users of Arc, Beam and Ray whose configuration includes a Sub (with or without surrounds), who may find their Sub output is lower than desired after performing a new Trueplay tuning.
Users with Beam or Ray bonded with Sub can increase the Sub level for a more powerful low-end response, however this won’t have the same impact for Arc users. Customers using Arc bonded with a Sub (and/or surrounds) who find their Sub output is lower than desired following performing a new Trueplay tuning, should temporarily disable Trueplay on Arc until this is addressed by an upcoming software update.
Trueplay tunings for Home Theater configurations without a bonded Sub are unaffected, including standalone soundbars and those bonded with surrounds only.
If you would like any assistance adjusting the sound of your Home Theater setup, the community is here to help. You can also contact Sonos support.
Moderation edit:
With the 14.18 software update, the above mentioned issues have been addressed, and the Enhanced Clarity for Arc adjustments are retained. There was a clear preference within our community for the previous volume settings, and these have been restored. This will be apparent immediately after updating to 14.18. The Trueplay issue has been fixed. Customers who experienced a lower Sub level after performing Trueplay after updating to 14.12 will need to update their systems and then perform a new Trueplay tuning in order to address these improvements in their system. Customers will hear a more powerful low end response, meaning any Sub level adjustments made after 14.12 should no longer be required.

Strange version number for just bugfixes and ehancements. Usually they handle that on third level.
Well and truly buried their head in the sand. Sonos couldn't even be bothered to tell us about it, or even pretend to be proud of releasing it to address their own issues. Says a lot that. Shameful
so much whinging

There’s a hell of a lot to whinge about.
My suggestion would be to send the link of this thread - and similar ones - as well as Peters videos to youtube tech folks. First on the list would be Linus tech as he did a rave of the arc, specifically with the sub.
Sonos will only adress this if it effects sales. Make noise.
Today I have written the following letter to Patrick Spence, President and CEO, SONOS, Santa Barbara, CA: “Short and direct to the point! Your firm’s software upgrade to 14.12 has made my ARC + Gen 3 Sub + two (2) SL Ones impossible to listen to. You have turned a wonderful system into a Yugo. Many of your customers are experiencing the same problem. Including one person who is suggesting a class action lawsuit. Suggestion: read their comments on the Sonos community forum.” Sonos’ stock is tanking. Unless they fix this problem ASAP, I have no doubt that the company will not survive. No one who has heard my Sonos system would ever buy one of their products...the sound is terrible.
@bockersjv . FYI the system name was added in 14.12.
There’s a new System Name item in settings
That’s been there, saw it about 4 weeks ago too.
14.14 has just been released! Yet to test it but seen some positive comments elsewhere about this update fixing the sub issue :)
Is ver. 14.4 a Sonos App update or a Sonos system update?
Is 14.4 a Sonos App update or a Sonos system update?
Both.

Both.
I see it. I just updated both app and started the system update...underway

No change in my eyes mate, don’t think 14.14 addressed the problem.
I used to have sub at +4 sounded beautiful, went to +10 and above I had plaster cracking on my walls in my house due to vibration… it was mental!!
Now its nothing near what it was even on +15, it’s a paperweight sitting in the corner.
Was thinking of getting a 2nd Sub, still have 30% discount but now having second thoughts about the whole system.

Can you send me that 30% discount code?
Also, did you by chance unplug everything after the successful system update and the power up again? Did you retune/via trueplay?
I just updated, but too much homework going on in my house at the moment to test the system with my 4K UHD Blu-ray copy of “Moonfall”The all time bass/sub buster sound track--that has to be played even LOUDer to break any nearby glass ha ha
Just to be sure, you have to update the app, then go in to the app and run the Settings>System>System updates process. If you don’t do the second, nothing has changed on the speakers, you’ve merely updated the “remote control” that you use to send commands to the system on the speakers.
Updated all but Arc+Sub+Surrounds failed with 1002 error. Tried rebooting speakers and boost but still failing
1002 is a communication error. If a reboot of your router, and your Sonos device doesn’t fix it, your best bet would be to call SonosSupport directly to discuss it.

“1002 is a communication error.” Good to know in case something like this happens to me in the future. Thanks for that.
My update went smoothly as usual. Fingers-crossed, I've never had a wireless or communication error e.g. disconnects since I initially setup the arc. I enjoyed the sound and effects coming out my Sonos with previous firmware and for me no need to increase volume, or increase any of my trueplay settings. I do however enjoy setting my Height speakers to +5 or more always.
Let’s see if what I hear or not with 14.14.
14.14 doesn’t fix the Arc+Sub for me either. Its a little better with sub-level @ +9 with Trueplay on. With Trueplay off, Sub-level -3 sounds around the same. So there is still a job to do for the Sonos-engineers.
I think it’s ridiculous that Sonos prefer to let their costumers wait for ages, rather than admit their failure and roll back 14.10
I suggest Sonos get rid of all their Bose-staff, who caused this debacle and hire some people who know what they are doing. I’m really disappointed and frustrated @ Sonos. 14.14 doesn't resolve the issue, everyone with Arc+sub is affected. Sonos, get you priorities right and fix this damn issue!

Why would you unplug everything then power it back up? Never needed to do this.
I removed the sub and surrounds and managed to update the arc, readded the sub but now can’t add the surrounds as it keeps failing with network error.

Just trying to help. Keep on doing what you’re doing.
There is a reason why Sonos’s stock price has gone down over 58% in the last 12 months. They have become the Yugo of the audio equipment world. Based upon the excellent reviews I purchased...for over $2,000...the ARC + Generation 3 Sub + two (2) SL Ones. Up until they upgraded the software to 14.12 I was very happy with my purchase. Now, after the upgrade, it is impossible to listen to the system. A $30 transistor radio from Radio Shack would sound better. I would never recommend a Sonos product. In spite of all of the negative comments on the forum, and after over a month of the upgrade to 14.12, Sonos has not resolved the problem. Is it time for a class action lawsuit? Would it help others from making the same mistake that I have made, if I burn my Sonos equipment on social media? Should I sell the system on E-Bay for a “fire sale” price, after disclosing in the full description what is wrong with Sonos? Replies, please.
People saying in the Sonos group on FB that 14.14 sound like 14.10 but my system still sucks like 14.12
Did trueplay 3 times with both iPhone/iPad
Sounds better with trueplay off but still doesnt sound good :/
