Hi everyone,

I’ve been using my Sonos Roam for just over 2 years. It is always plugged in via USB-C and connected to my WiFi network. Today, while I was listening to music at a moderate volume, the speaker suddenly started making a very loud and disturbing buzzing/crackling noise. The volume of the noise was much higher than normal playback, even though the music volume was nowhere near maximum.

I tried to manually turn off the Roam, but it wouldn’t respond to any button presses. After about a minute, the noise stopped by itself. When I picked up the speaker, I noticed a strong burnt electronics smell coming from it.

Now, it's turned off and I’m quite worried it might have a serious hardware failure.

Has anyone else experienced something similar with their Roam?
Is there anything I can try to reset it, or is it completely dead?
Given that it seems like a hardware failure shortly after the 2-year mark, does Sonos offer any kind of support or goodwill replacement in cases like this?

Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

This is a hardware failure. I recommend keeping the unit off a charger until you contact SONOS support.

Did you notice any status light activity during this event?

Hey thanks for the reply,

No the status light was white like normal.

Same thing just happened to me, only in the middle of the night, while playing soothing sleep sounds. Jolted awake, grabbed it off of the charging base, and tried to turn it off. After pressing the on/off button for a while, it finally stopped. Ozone smell from the speaker.

Completely unresponsive. The only sign of life is that the status light is blue. No white light at the base if I plug it in, and the app doesn’t recognize it.

Purchased in August of 22, so I doubt anything will be done about it.

I’d still call Sonos Support directly to discuss it.

I did (chat, not call) - working again! For anyone else this happens to, I let it go until the battery drained and the blue light went out. Then plugged it back in. Still nothing, but Support had me try a hard reset (hold down the button for 12 seconds) after unplugging. Still nothing, but while Support was looking for something else to try, I tried the same thing while it was plugged in, and that worked. White light returned, it showed up in the app and on their end, and I was able to play through it again.

Note that the hard reset did not work when I tried it before the battery drained, plugged in or not.

My Sonos Roam used to make a noise like a jackhammer: any time I listened to music it could happen, and then eventually it would switch off. It turned out that the Sonos Roam had battery problems, and it would run out of battery very quickly. I thought these two problems were unrelated, but I realised that the scary noise was precisely because the battery couldn't supply enough power to the speaker! I did a few tests: the noise happened whenever it was loud, but if it was plugged in it never happened.

So I bought a new battery online, replaced it as described here and here, and never had this problem again for months.

Sonos knows how unreliable the battery is, it looks like they tried to fix it with Roam 2.

it just happened to me !!!! (roam 2)

this is horrible, all my pets and family was scared to death. It should have never happened .

Got also Roam 1 (~4 years and this never happened)
