Just a quick first impression on the Sonos Play. Yours may be different based upon your room and hearing.

Testing as a Stand-Alone speaker

  • Don’t right off the bat, make a comparison to a Move2. The Move2 will always out-shine the Play.
  • Set the Play up and listen to a few of your favorite test tracks. Be sure to turn on TruePlay tuning.
  • After a few minutes of listening the Play will adjust to the room acoustics.
  • After a while (in my testing) you’ll enjoy the Play for what it is…a portable speaker that performs better than the Sonos Roam series.
  • I sat about 8 feet from the speaker which exhibited a stereo effect depending upon the track.
  • There is low-end…again depending upon the track.
  • Overall (IMO) in terms of frequency response the Play has decent vocals but may be a bit bright for some.
  • A/B testing against the Move series (in my case the Move2). Suffice it to say the Move2 wins hands-down.

Testing as a Stereo Pair

  • The Play produces a pleasant sound stage with good separation.
  • I have a vintage track I use by the O’Jays that moves instruments from left to right and one byte will silence the right speaker. The Play did justice to the track.
  • I was very impressed with the highs, lows and mid-range.
  • The Brightness I mentioned earlier was much less which was an improvement (IMO)
  • As a stereo pair the Play competes very well against a single Move 2 (if not slightly better for overall sound)

Bluetooth Grouping with another Move2

  • The feature worked as promoted by Sonos

Airplay 2

  • No issues

Wi-Fi Discovery

  • My setup is Wi-Fi 7
  • Plays were set two (2) feet from my router and choose 5Ghz

Update!

Listening to my stereo pair of Play’s in the same listening position as described above (8 feet away). I’m now feeing faint vibrations on the leather seating surface which is very tight (it’s a recliner).

I also switched them over to act as computer speakers for my 2025 Mac mini via Airplay. Youtube voice and video in sync. WoW!

Becoming more impressed with these speakers day by day as they get broken-in. 😊

I'm usually 3 feet or so from mine and quite Impressed with the sound.

Not comparing but I'm finding I am happy carrying my Play around and not using other Sonos speakers in the room I'm in.

Update!

Not trying to make more sales for Sonos however…

IMO a single Play is adequate for casual listening to be able to move about your home or outside with Sonos (i.e carry the music with you; even over Wi-Fi).

To really enjoy the Play for serious listening a stereo pair is a huge upgrade. Of course the Play’s will be stationary. You’ll eventually forgot your listening to speakers the size of the Play’s as the sound stage is very impressive.

I’m listening at the moment to my stereo pair at 45 degrees to the right Play; the sound is definitely to my left. If I turn my head (or position) 45 degrees to the left and face the right speaker the sound is such it’s almost as though I’m seated directly in front of them.

To give you an idea of separation the Play’s are positioned at the front of my room; 2 inches to either side of my ArcUltra.

FYI, my room is 20 length x 13 wide x 8 high
