How to temporarily move a Sonos Move speaker pair to a new wireless network

This could not be a simpler scenario that I’ve ran into massive problems trying to solve. I have a Sonos Move (gen 1) pair set up on my home wireless. Everything works great.

I want to connect that pair to a new network. Both wireless networks are active, so I want to temporarily switch them. I want to “tell” the two moves to reconnect to the new network. I want to do this without factory resetting the two Moves.

I have my phone and it’s connected to my new network. What do I do?

I didn't see anything on how to do that.

Have you considered connecting your controller and Moves to a travel router and moving all of them, as a set, between your two wifi networks?

If both networks are available to SONOS, simply add the new WiFi to the SONOS system. For a while I had two different WiFi networks, both using the same subnet. SONOS was free to use either WiFi. If one WiFi went down for maintenance, SONOS units would move to the other without any fuss.

Here’s what Sonos tell you to do: https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/connect-sonos-to-a-new-router-or-wi-fi-network

On older devices a factory reset would be needed, on newer devices (like er Move Gen 1) it isn’t.

No, because I have plenty of permanent speakers at home that would lose functionality for the rest of my family if I did that.

This is interesting. Maybe I’m mis-understanding how Sonos works. My travel router doesn’t share a subnet with my home network.

Yes, I keep getting sent this link, which is the first that pops up when I googled this problem in the first place. However, it’s not helpful because it can’t “find” my existing moves when trying to put them on the new network. I think it’s because they’re still connected to the old/current network and not “looking” for a new network/not “discoverable”?

Maybe if you power down your other Sonos, so they don't get moved and disable the original wifi before trying to switch the Moves?

I don't have any to experiment with here, just guessing.

In the case of a travel router you could give it the same SSID and password as the home system. This is not required. In any case setting this up at home will be tricky, but relatively straight forward away from home.

We have a SONOS SYSTEM at work that is not associated with my home system. I wanted to demonstrate my MOVE to a colleague at work. Naturally the WiFi’s were different as was the system registration. My iPad was already able to use the work WIFi. I simply started up my own SONOS controller and the MOVE, then added work WiFi to the MOVE. Away from your home network, the link above would be applicable. During the process take care not to setup a new system or join another system if any is nearby. You want to deal only with the travel router.

On my return home, the MOVE informed my other units about the work WiFi. Now I can simply take any of my units to work and use them without any fuss. Note that this is MY system. I can’t use the work’s NAS or SONOS units.
