What causes Sony TV audio source to not always be the external source of Arc Ultra upon turn-on?

System info:

  • Sony 77 A80J TV
  • Apple TV4K (connected to Sony TV via HDMI 4)
  • Sonos Arc Ultra (connected to Sony TV via HDMI 3 eArc)

Issue: Turn system on (usually via Apple remote) after everything being off overnight or some period of time and sometimes Sony TV immediately will be using the external audio which is the Sonos Arc Ultra and sometimes I’ll find the Sony TV will be using the internal TV speakers and I have to manually switch TV audio source to the external audio source (Sonos Arc Ultra).

Question: Anyone know what causes this erratic behavior and how to fix it so the audio is consistently external audio of the Arc Ultra?

Hi @Hans-TX

Thanks for your post!

I am sorry to hear of this issue you are having with your TV sometimes using its own speakers on power-on.

I recommend that you reboot your TV by unplugging it from power for at least a minute.

If that does not solve the issue, then there is a likely HDMI-CEC conflict caused by another HDMI device - I recommend you get in touch with our technical support team who have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your Sonos system and what it reports.

I hope this helps.

Go to Settings > (Arc room name) and turn TV Autoplay to On.

I’d also double check the TV for updates, and apply them.

Thanks.

I confirmed the TV software is up to date

And, confirmed the TV Autoplay for Arc Ultra is set to “on” in the Sonos app but will try toggling it just in case it is “stuck”

Similar behaviour was reported a couple of months ago.

Which certainly implies a call to Sonos Support to discuss it might be in order.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system. Something we in the public don’t have.

What does “off” mean to you? Do you cut off electricity to the TV, ATV and Sonos, or is it the normal low power setting that gets selected when you use the button on your remote(s).

Hi @Hans-TX

I feel it is worth pointing out that if the Arc Ultra is merely silent and you hear no TV audio, that is likely because the Arc Ultra has not had the right source (TV Audio) selected. When, however, the TV’s own speakers are in use, that is not due to a setting in the Sonos app or on the Arc Ultra - it is because the TV does not realise there is an Audio system connected to it at all. It’s an entirely different issue, with an entirely different solution.

I hope this helps.

Electricity to the components is not cut off.  Press “pwr” button on ATV remote to cause everything to “turn off” and press same “pwr” button on ATV remote to turn everything back to an “on” state (operational).

@Corry P - Thanks for the responses and information.  When the issue occurs, it’s clear the sound is coming from the Sony TV’s speakers and this is confirmed by examining what the audio source says in the TV settings, which shows TV Speakers as the source and I have to change that to External Audio Source.

I’ll try unplugging the Sony TV for a while and plugging back in to see if that corrects this inconsistent and unexpected behavior.  I too suspect a CEC issue somewhere in the chain or even perhaps a timing issue of the CEC when each items is powered on to an active state, and if the issue remains after unplugging the TV, then I’ll reach out to Sonos technical support.  Will post an update here once I have more information.

I will say this…

If you are having to select the Arc Ultra vs the TV speakers then there is an issue with the CEC implementation which points to the TV settings.

When using the AppleTV remote to turn the TV on it will most likely select the HDMI input that the AppleTV box is connected to.

The issue/behavior described above are different with the latter being expected behavior.
