Hello, I currently have a Samsung tv that does not support optical. First step in my troubleshooting was to buy the Sonos official optical adapter. Adapter did not support E-Arc nor did it support sound. After speaking with Samsung support they said I’m going to need an Audio extractor that is powered so that the e arc channel can register power is applied. Non of these options have worked. I’m pretty competent with reading schematics as I’m an Aviation Electrician, however this Sonos system is very limited and I just bought this tv and my Sonos ray is outside of its return policy. Any tips or troubleshooting I can do on my end to get these systems to work?

You are right...that is wild 🤣. There’s no way to make your model work properly with the Ray without jumping through a lot of 3rd party hoops. There’s still no guarantee that things will work as you want or as they’re suppose to.
The best solution is to step up to this model UN55DU8000FXZA as shown on Samsung website. This link has a better picture of the blow-out that shows the optical port.

The Sonos adapter is Optical → HDMI-ARC, not HDMI-ARC → Optical, which is why it doesn’t work. You need an HMDI-ARC → Optical converter, which can be picked up on Amazon for around $20 US.
I’ve already purchased that as well. Doesn’t work.
Some optical cables have little caps on the ends to protect the nib. Make sure you remove those little caps from both ends.
This one, below, always worked with my Samsung TV when I had the Playbar. (Playbar to adaptor by optical cable, then HDMI from adapter to the HDMI-ARC socket. Should be exactly the same for the Ray).

What I would say is if your TV doesn’t support optical, it’s unlikely to have an HDMI-ARC port... Is that the reason this isn’t working, because you can’t get sound via HDMI to a Sonos soundbar without using an HDMI-ARC port.

Yea, similar functionality but all I can say is my extractor worked well with the Playbar in allowing me to connect the Playbar to the eArc port. But you also need to set the relevant audio out settings on the TV. The Ray should appear as Receiver.

What is the year/model of your Samsung TV? It’s very strange that it doesn’t support optical unless it’s so far advanced (which I doubt) that Samsung feels optical is obsolete. 😂

No and Sonos doesn’t supply support for it. They basically want you to pay for an upgraded model. I’m stuck with a useless soundbar now because the industry is leading towards all hdmi.

At this point with the support I’ve received on my 2024 Samsung 55 inch tv I am. Because they sell adapters that are not compatible because they need a power source to enable E-ARC.
Let me be sure I understand you correctly….
- Sonos is to blame because Samsung decided not to include an optical port on the TV that they (not Sonos) manufactured.
- Sonos is to blame because they manufactured an Optical only soundbar that the Samsung TV you purchased does not support.
- Sonos is to blame because they make two other sound bars that support HDMI input but you decided not to purchase either which is what your Samsung TV requires.
- Sonos is to blame because you didn’t do proper research on either the Ray and/or the Samsung TV you purchased.

- The industry is now leading with HDMI E-Arc.
- Sonos is unable to support HDMI E-Arc with their adapter-cable due to power sourcing capabilities.
- I had this sound bar prior to any purchase of any new television. However Sonos support claims that their product functions adequately to enable E-Arc.
- Yes Sonos is to blame because they created an adapter that is not compatible with modern innovation which in turn drives individuals to purchase a “greater product”
What additional information do you need for validation that this Sonos Ray, that is currently sold doesn’t support 2024 adaptation.
I’ll not take this conundrum of opinions any further. It’s unfortunate your Samsung does not natively work with the Ray. Well wishes going forward.

I believe I answered your question 22 days ago. The Samsung you have does not support HDMI. The information on the Ray clearly states that connections to a TV is optical that is found on MOST TV’s. The operative word being MOST. For whatever reason Samsung chose not to include optical on your model. No where in the specs for the Ray does it indicate that there is an adapter to make the optical output work with HDMI input. So I fail to see how Sonos is responsible for your Samsung’s inability to connect to the Ray. Below is a link to all information on the Ray. Please show me where it says that the Ray is or can be made to be HDMI compatible.

Maybe I didn’t get the real problem, but as far as I understand op has got a new tv without optical out but with hdmi eARC. So out of the box without additional hardware he can’t connect Sonos Ray to that tv.
Imho as someone else mentioned before he just will need a simple hdmi audioextractor with optical output that supports a hdmi out port with ARC functionality. That hdmi ARC out would have to be connected to tvs hdmi (e)ARC input.
The linked device above imo should work if you can trust its tech specs. But maybe op got a broken device or that one didn‘t work as expected to do. There are a lot of similar devices on the market mostly with not just a hdmi ARC out but also supporting a regular hdmi input to connect any source device with a regular hdmi output.
What could be important is to turn of eARC and atmos support on tv settings as the mentioned devices just have ARC (without e) connectivity.
That‘s my technical point of view and personal experience.
Thank you I very well could have received a bad extractor. Just unable to up to this point. I’ve played with the settings every other way and no joy.
