Sonos Ray connection using Optical to HDMI not connecting to TV

Hi,

I have a Sonos Ray and Samsung UE32F6000F, without optical port and have purchased the Sonos HDMI to Optical adapter.

I have switched the “eArc” setting on in the menu and connected the HDMI port to the one labelled eArc on the back of the TV.

I am unable to get the two to connect using the Sonos app and nor does the TV recognise a speaker has been connected.

I have noticed the optical cable end does not glow red when connected to any device (the TV, a laptop etc). I have also tried 3 other HDMI cables.

Any ideas/tips?

Thanks

Volume commands (anything CEC related) can’t be carried across optical, it just doesn’t have the bandwidth. You’ll need to set the audio settings on the TV, and anything that feeds it, to Dolby Digital, which is what optical can handle. In order to have your remote control the Sonos, you’ll need to set it to emit IR, then go through the process of ‘teaching’ the Sonos (in the controller) to recognize it.

The Sonos Optical Audio Adapter is not suitable for the Ray. The official adapter is for connecting to the TV’s optical port. It’s a directional optical to HDMI adapter which is the opposite of what you require.

What you require is an HDMI audio extractor which has an optical output that you can then connect to the Ray.

Thank you Mr. T, I can now rest that I am not going mad and have just purchased the wrong device.

I have found a generic HDMI audio extractor with opticial output on Amazon.

Ok I have received the correct eArc to optical adapter and successfully set the TV connection up in the Sonos app, however I cannot hear any audio from the Ray.

My TV shows an eArc connection and simulates audio being played through a little graphic.

When I change the volume on my TV remote it comes up on screen stating volume change in eArc channel. I also tried to up the volume via the app, no joy.

The Ray does play music through Spotify so I know it is has speakers that work within it.

I have tried powering off and back on…

Any ideas? Thanks

Thank you. I’ve set my TV to eArc (auto, the only option I could set is ‘pcm’ from the sound menu).

I think my Ray is seeing the IR remote as its status lights flash with up and down on the volume selections. I followed the steps within the app to set up the remote (and TV set up previously).

edit to add - I can control the volume of music played via the Sonos app to the Ray using my TV remote now. But no sound from anything on from the TV

You don’t need eARC when you are subsequently converting the audio to work over optical.

Thanks, tried that now so no eArc mode and the TV says it is playing to an audio system via HDMI instead. No joy on sound but the led light is is responding on the Ray.

The device I am using to convert hdmi to optical has no options to adjust anything.

I did buy the Ray from the Sonos refurbished store, perhaps it is just broken and return for a Beam instead.

What is this device you’re using to convert HDMI to optical? I’d think a refurbished Sonos device would have already been tested before being shipped to you, but we all know what happens when you ‘assume’ ;)

Ignore the ‘playing animation’ part, it only shows that data is coming in, not that the Ray can ‘read it’.

When properly connected, there should be no sound on your TV, only the Sonos device.

In fact, not only would it be helpful to know what device is changing HDMI to optical, it might be beneficial to know what TV you have.

That’s the one :) and the device is this one https://amzn.eu/d/gCVJrA1

it is odd but must admit it is more complicated than I had thought it would be.

i am using it in my snug, I have a Sonos arc ult et all in my living room. Tomorrow I will try the Ray in that room, the TV is older and has an optical connection.

Bleh, Amazon UK link….

Not familiar with this device (eSynic Professional 192khz ARC eARC Audio Extractor ARC HDMI to Optical Audio Extractor with HDMI & Optical Cable Support 5.0 and 2.0 Audio Format for HDTV to Soundbar(Must Connect TV eARC ARC Port))

Are there settings you can access? If such a device does work, it needs to be set to Dolby Digital, not anything higher, like Dolby Digital Plus or Atmos. This is the best that a Sonos Ray can process.

Seems odd, in comparison to other devices that interpret eARC signal,  that it is so inexpensive. Have you reached out to that company’s CS for assistance? Do you have it powered?
