Sonos / Apple 4K TV / LG TV lip sync delay

I have 2 similar TV setups and both experience minor lip sync delays when watching any TV via Apple TV 4K (black box), e.g. Netflix   When I watch using the LG TV’s inbuilt apps, e.g. Netflix, they’re no delays.

I have used SONOS and Apple TV for many years but don’t recall the delay being so noticeable.

I have read many comments about this issue and have tried everything I have come across.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Notes

  • All firmware and software on all devices is up-to-date
  • Audio sync settings have been run on SONOS app, LG TV and Apple TV, including the Apple TV sound calibration and SONOS trueplay.
  • all lip sync settings are set to Zero, however, I need a setting below zero to sync the sound.

Primary TV System:

  • LG TV model: OLED65B8STB
  • Apple TV 4K (iOS 18.2)
  • Sonos: all connected via WIFI (wifi 270mbps)
  1. Arc Ultra connect to ARC HDMI port on TV
  2. Sub 4
  3. 2 x One

thank you in advance to anyone that responds to this post.

Hi @BlaBlaTron

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Sorry to hear of the lip-sync issue you are having.

I recommend that you reboot both the Apple TV and the TV - in the case of the TV, please reboot by unplugging from power for at least a minute.

Ultimately, however, it is the TV’s job to ensure that video and audio are synced - if the above has not helped, I recommend you contact LG for support.

I hope this helps.

The real solution - though I don’t think it’s available yet from any manufacturer - is a video delay feature. Lip-sync is an issue for many, not just Sonos users.

Some broadcasters (and even some programs) are worse than others, too, regarding lip sync.

Video can be delayed by all kinds of image enhancing features on the TV. You could try to switch those off. See if this helps.

I have always found best to use the native Apps on the LG for best experience, which suggests a Apple TV issue.

Train yourself to look at the eyes and not the lips if you experience lip sync issue you cant resolve, eg live sports/news remote broadcast.

Have you tried turning off frame rate matching on ATV?

I have the same issue and it’s driving me insane I can’t have the full movie experience of enjoyable fight scenes, feels like I’m watching those old Jackie Chan movies “that I loved” when you hear the punch land after it hits 😉and the dubbing is so out. That was enjoyable then but now i need the full experience that I paid for. @Sonos the app needs the lip sync to go into the negative it starts at 0 and allows to increase to 5 it need an allowance to go to -5 as-well because the increase only makes my sync and I’m sure many other worse.

Sometimes simple things can help.
Reset the sound on the Apple TV. Turn it off and remove the HDMI cable from the TV.
Remove the Arc Ultra's HDMI cable from the TV.
Reset the sound on the TV.
Turn off the TV and unplug it for 3-5 minutes.
At the same time, turn off your Ultra and unplug it for 3-5 minutes
Connect your Apple TV to your TV, preferably in a different HDMI port than before.
Connect your Ultra to the TV's eArc/ARC hdmi port.

Turn everything on.
On your Apple TV, check the sound settings: Sound out-TV speaker, Sound format-Auto and Immersive sound-Dolby Atmos.
Check the sound settings on your TV: Audio output Arc Ultra HDMI eAarc/ARC, Mode for HDMI eArc/ARC-Auto, format for digital output sound-Pass Through.

Hope it works :)

@Makulubaas You say “Sonos the app needs the lip sync to go into the negative it starts at 0 and allows to increase to 5 it need an allowance to go to -5 as well”. You know this would mean Sonos delaying music to before it receives it?

Never thought of it like that, it would have to slow video rather than the sound to be on the negative side. Problem is 0 is already delayed after the video and + only delays sound more.
