Hi all,

I recently purchased an Arc Ultra and Sub 4. I'd like to get 2 rear surrounds but I don't think the layout of my room is ideal.

Please see the pictures of the room below

. We don't want to put the speakers on stands behind the couch.

I was previously considering 2 Era 300s to mount on the wall but I read you don't want to mount them close to ceiling and I don't think we want to mount them in the middle of the wall height wise.

As such, would love your thoughts on:

  1. Do you have any suggestions on best set up? If I mounted Era 100s in a location close to the ceiling like where you see the previous mounts in the photo (from old wired system) would that work?

  2. If no Sonos setup works well would it be better to purchase non Sonos rear speakers and connect them via amp? We have wiring in the walls already from prior system.

Thanks for the help!

Mounting advice is “no closer than 2ft from the ceiling” so it should be ok on that wall. Aesthetically I’d go for wall mounts mounted (height wise) centrally to the pictures and mid-way between pictures and side walls.

Thanks - that guidance is with regards to the Era 100s? Assume the era 300s wouldn’t work well in that location?

No: for the 300’s:

FAQ

Where should I place Era 300?

For optimal sound quality, Era 300 should be placed indoors and have approximately two feet of overhead clearance. Placement in an enclosed space such as a bookshelf is not recommended as this could impact dispersion and playback clarity.

If you prefer to save surface space, you can use the custom designed Sonos Era 300 Wall Mount or Sonos Era 300 Stand. These accessories are also great options if you are using a pair as rear speakers for home theater surround sound.

Thank you.

If I decided to go with non Sonos speakers (to avoid having to wire for power) and got an AMP would TruePlay work on them? I see the below but unclear to me if that means Trueplay will run but only work for the soundbar and not optimize the rear surrounds or if it will optimize the rears too. Trying to assess if I’d be at a disadvantage sound quality wise without purchasing a Sonos Speaker.

Amp

An Amp supports Trueplay when using Sonos In-Wall or In-Ceiling by Sonance Architectural speakers with the Amp. It is not available for the Sonos Outdoor by Sonance Architectural speakers.

Amp also supports Trueplay when powering Sonos rear channels in a home theater setup.

Check the Sonos store for the in-wall Sonos speakers. They would do well for surround but not as well for Atmos as the 300s. They support Trueplay.

You could plan to  mount them closer to ear level and patch the original mount holes. There are usually no obstructions to pulling wires at that height and you could easily work around the studs.

Whilst Trueplay can improve the sound in many rooms, it doesn’t always work. Some (including me) have turned Trueplay off in a room. And the full Trueplay still needs an iPhone so the many android phone users out there are still happy with the sound of their speakers even without trying to tune them.
