I saw post on here from a year ago but that topics closed now where someone described a metallic sound whilst viewing 5.1 dolby content that cleared when forcing to pcm instead but the pcm upset the balance.

I just wanted to say that I too have noticed some issues when the Ray connected via optical to my Sony TV with 5.1 content that I suspect might be the same issue.  I would describe the problem is, that for some reason the surround channels are being mixed to mono through the Ray and are very slightly out of phase with each other, thus creating this awkward flanger type sound when mixed together. I’m reasonably confident (but not 100%) its just the non-stereo surround channels causing this, so its most noticeable on background/fx type sounds.

The normal stereo component seems ok (not that you can really sense stereo on the Ray, god knows why they thought it was a good idea to place the tweeters so close together!!)

Kinda have a love/hate relationship with this thing. The Trueplay works pretty well, and it definitely brings out mid range detail very well and dialogue sounds super clear, but its such a colossal waste of the width of this thing to bung all the drivers so close together!

Hello @Arksun, welcome to the Sonos Community.

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing audio quality issues with your Sonos Ray.

I would suggest some basic troubleshooting if you’ve not done that yet. Check the connections and cables first make sure they are seated properly.

You can also try and reboot your TV and Sonos Ray by unplugging the power cables - wait for a few minutes before plugging them back in.

If possible, try and capture the audio issue and reach out to our Support Team for some live troubleshooting. They have tools at their disposal to provide you with information and advice specific to your system and what it reports.

I hope this helps.

Thats thing about optical digital, either it works or it doesn’t and its a horrific garbled mess, its not like analog cables.  The cable is fine. I turn the sonos and tv off by the mains socket every night, its not a reboot issue either. I’ll try the support team….

I’d very curious to see if other people here are experiencing this too. It’s only with the surround component of the optical signal.  Stereo left and right sound fine, its surround left and right, which for some reason on the Sonos Ray, get downmixed with the channels mis-aligned by about 8ms ish, hence creating the metalling horrible sound

The workaround is to force your playback device to PCM only. This fixes this issue, but then introduces potential levelling issues (like fx sounds being bit too loud/dynamic)  I’ve decided to use PCM in the meantime as I cannot stand the metallic sound anymore.
