Hello everyone,

I just got gifted a Beolab 8 (Bang and Olufsen) and plan to buy a Sonos multirom system.

I would liek to use the beolab 8 for the TV and connect it to the Sonos multi room system.

I have two questions, please be kind my technical knowledge in sound system is limited :

  • How do I connect the beolab 8 to Sonos ? From my understanding, to connect an other loudspeaker to the Sonos system I need to connect it to the Sonos port device using RCA cables. What I don’t manage to understand if this is the only right method and if beolab 8 has an RCA input (input or output I’m not sure what’s the right one)
  • How do I connect the beolab to a TV ? I’m not sure but seems like I need to connect a beoconnect core device to the TV using HDMI ARC cable and then either connect beolab 8 to the beoconnect core with a cable or using wifi if the beoconnect core is connected to a wiza device.

Please connerct me if any of my statments is wrong.

Have a nice day !

The beolab 8s have a usb line input. They don’t have any output so you can’t connect them to a Sonos system to send sound from the beolab 8 into Sonos, but you should be able to connect the Port output to the 8s line in with a relevant adapter

For the TV connection, they use B&O power link cables or WiFi to connect to a b&o tv.

For other manufacturer TVs you have 2 options:

  • beoconnect core box which will accept hdmi eArc, optical or line in from your tv and use B&O power link or WiFi to the beolab 8s
  • stereo rca out from the tv to the speaker usb line in (with an appropriate analogue to usb adapter)

If you get a beoconnect core, you could connect the Port output to the connect and the TV eArc to the connect. Then the beoconnect would send it to the 8s. Depending on the beoconnect it may have a delay converting the audio from the Port.

While B&O Power link cables use rj45 connectors and look like over engineered Ethernet cables, they are not for computer networks. In the past power link used larger round din connectors which has just been improved over time.

Hello,

Thanks you very much for all the informations provided, you are helping me a lot.

I would have one last question : would the analogue to usb adapter diminish the quality of the sound or have any other downgrade impact?

Have a very nice day!

It would likely depend on the adapter in question, but it seems extremely unlikely that there would be any significant difference.

Okay thank you all very much, it’s very much appreciated !

The “diminish the quality” question is difficult to answer precisely.

As an analogy, you would not want a world class telescope attempt to study the universe after looking through window glass, but looking out the window to watch the kids play in the yard is fine.

There will be a time delay as audio passes through the SONOS system and potentially additional delays as the audio passes through adapters. This can be critical for voice sync in a TV program or using SONOS speakers in the same room as the B&O speakers, but is usually not an issue when sharing music with a distant room. Delaying a recording made in the 1970’s a few more milliseconds is not significant.

If you use quality adapters between B&O and the SONOS system, there will not be any damage to the music on a human scale.
