Arc Ultra and New Sony TV

I have a new ARC Ultra and a new Sony Bravia XR8C TV.  There are no other HDMI devices connected to the TV, only the ARC ultra which is connected to the ARC input (HDMI 3).  CEC (Sony Bravia Sync) is turned on and working on the TV and Sonos ARC Ultra is listed in the Bravia Sync devices list.  Both the TV and the ARC Ultra are updated to the latest software.  Both the TV and the ARC Ultra have a hard wired network connection.  In the Sonos App, TV Autoplay and Ungroup on Autoplay are turned on.  The only other Sonos in the system is a Sonos Beam connected to the Master Bedroom  which is working good.  The problem is with the Sonos ARC Ultra.  It works fine for playing music.  If I have been watching TV and turn it off, when I turn it back later, I have no sound.  If I go into the App, it says TV (HDMI) is what is selected for the ARC but there is no sound.  The only way I have found to make it work is select Music then change back to TV in the App; after that the TV sound is fine.  I have tried rebooting both TV and ARC (power disconnect and reconnect).  I have tried factory defaulting and setting up the ARC again.  I tried reseating the HDMI at both ends.  I tried a different HDMI.  All of the settings appear to be OK.  Any ideas?

I have the same setup with the exception mine is the Arc not Arc Ultra.  I have the same issue here, but not every time I turn on the TV.  When there is no sound I try to turn off the TV, wait a bit, then turn it on again.  If that fails I reboot the TV by holding down the TV power button until the reset option shows.

I believe this is a Sony thing as the two beams I have never fail to work correctly.  Seems like the HDMI “hand shake” doesn’t work every time.  Pain in the butt.

This sounds like a frustrating HDMI-ARC handshake issue rather than a hardware fault, especially since audio comes back as soon as you switch sources in the Sonos app. A few things you could still try: disable eARC (if enabled) and test standard ARC only, turn off Bravia Sync temporarily and re-enable it, and check the TV’s Digital Audio Out setting (try Auto 1 vs PCM). Some Sony Bravia models also have a known issue where ARC audio doesn’t re-initialize properly after standby. If that’s the case, a firmware fix may be needed from Sony or Sonos. Situations like this are exactly why a helpful buyer’s guide that covers real-world ARC/eARC quirks can save a lot of time before purchasing.
