I’m planning to set up a Sonos Arc ultra with two Subs(gen 4 and 3) for my great room and am debating between adding in-wall speakers powered by a Sonos Amp for a more immersive experience, or using a pair of Era 300s as surrounds. A few questions:

  1. If I go with the in-wall + Amp option, are there any limitations in terms of audio formats (e.g., Dolby Atmos, TrueHD, DTS)? Will the in-wall speakers only handle surround channels, or can they contribute to Atmos height effects?
  2. Does the Arc + in-wall setup provide the same level of immersion as using Era 300s with spatial audio?
  3. My hesitation with the Era 300s is that I have small kids (3 and 4 years old) and nephews who might knock them over. Any thoughts on stability or mounting options for the Eras?

  1. No difference. The Amp will take ‘surround sound ‘ information from the Arc Ultra.
  2. Hard to tell. In general, no, the Era 300s are designed differently for surround use than standard in wall speakers. That being said, your ears are the true judge.
  3. No kids, but I’ve bumped my Era 300s stands occasionally without issue. Your mileage may vary.

The Sonos Amp only has two channels so there is no option to connect a height or side drivers like the 300 offers.

I’d seriously look at wall mounting the Era-300s for the best sound. In-wall, Amp driven won’t be bad, but you will notice the 300 difference.

To obtain FULL immersion you need the Era 300’s. As has been said the Amp will only provide 2-channel sound.

Here’s another thought: Price Point

  • Amp + In-wall x 2 = $1280 *
  • Era 300 x 2 with stands = $1200
  • Era 300 x 2 with wall mounts = $1060

 * Additional cost for wiring and cutting holes in wall (unless this is new construction).
