Simple question. Can someone please confirm which type of hdmi cable is supplied with the Sonos Arc Ultra in the UK. Thanks.

Hi @Mr. T

I have - the post clearly states that only HDMI cables with HEAC support eARC. Not all HDMI cables support HEAC, therefore cables do have specifications.

I never said cables don’t have specifications, but as per that post it also clearly states “Cables aren't rated by HDMI version”.

Hi @isthatmysandwich

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

In direct answer to your question, Sonos supplies HDMI 2.0 cables.

The following response from @Rhonny is correct:

@isthatmysandwich

1.4 is generally fine for streaming services’ Atmos.

2.0 is needed for TrueHD Atmos via Blu-ray for example.

We used to supply HDMI 1.4 cables with the Beam, for example, but with Beam 2, Arc and Arc Ultra, we now supply HDMI 2.0 cables for use with eARC.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the confirmation, much appreciated 👍👍

Yeah, I don’t know where they got that little titbit from - it’s not mentioned in our documentation, and they did not leave notes for reference.

It does not appear that they got it from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#:~:text=HDMI%20Ethernet%20and,%5B54%5D, so I’m not sure where it came from.

I hope this helps.

They may have if they read the Wiki section on Cables and HDMI Cable Certifications.

I think what your colleague was intending by their statement was referring to the supplied cable by its official name as per https://www.hdmi.org/resource/cables

A simple Google search also provides the following reading Why shouldn't HDMI cables be labeled with version numbers?

I think you are right there, @Mr. T!

Maybe this should also be reviewed and updated:

HDMI ARC is compatible with HDMI 1.4 cables and all later versions.

Hi @craigski

The article mentions High Speed and Ultra High Speed cables, as well as going into HDMI v1.4, 2.0 etc. It seems comprehensive to me.

If you’ve spotted an error, however, please highlight it, right-click and choose “Copy link to highlight”, then post the link here. Thanks.

The error was quoted above in my post. Here it is in a link format:

Hi @craigski

Thanks. The same paragraph mentions “High Speed Cable” as a solution for 1.4 HDMI, so I think it is OK.

I will flag it with someone to check though - maybe I am just having a disagreeable day 😅

Too bad, we are now out of date! HDMI 2.2 is available. But, there is no rush to replace any cables to ARC or ARC ULTRA.

HDMI 2.1 was released in 2017, HDMI 2.0 was already out of date in 2020 when the original Sonos Arc was released.
