Setup is Xbox Series X → LG CX (using included HDMI 2.1 cable) → Sonos Arc (via eARC port 2 using included Sonos HDMI cable)

LG CX Audio Settings: Sound Out - HDMI ARC, eARC - On, HDMI Input Audio Format - Bitstream, AV Sync Adjustment - Bypass, Digital Sound Out - Pass Through

Xbox Series X & what Sonos app reports

Uncompressed 5.1 is reported as Multichannel PCM 7.1. Shouldn’t this be reported as LPCM 5.1?

Uncompressed 7.1 is reported as Multichannel PCM 7.1. Shouldn’t this be reported as LPCM 7.1?

DTS Digital is reported as Multichannel 7.1. Is this correct since Sonos doesn’t support DTS formats?

Dolby Digital is reported as Dolby Digital 5.1

Dolby Atmos for Home Theater is reported as Dolby Atmos

DTS:X for Home Theater is not supported by LG CX for Passthrough

Thanks!

When you are playing LPCM or DTS audio, “Multichannel PCM” is what you want the Sonos app to display.

The 5.1 displaying as 7.1 seems to be an issue with the LG CX. Read more here:

FYI… Sonos will begin supporting DTS Digital Surround audio with a future update later this year… but the CX doesn’t support DTS audio pass through so it really doesn’t matter with your setup.

Is Multichannel PCM 7.1 the same as LPCM 7.1? Because I read on this forum the Sonos app should display LPCM, not Multichannel to indicate it is lossless audio.

“Multichannel PCM 7.1” is the same as LPCM 7.1. When I watch Blu-ray discs with lossless LPCM audio or lossless DTS-HD Master Audio, the Sonos app displays “Multichannel PCM 5.1” or “Multichannel PCM 7.1” The Sonos app will never display “LPCM 7.1”.

These are the audio formats the Sonos app will display:

  • Stereo PCM
  • Dolby Digital
  • Dolby Digital Plus
  • Dolby Atmos (DD+)
  • Dolby Atmos
  • Dolby TrueHD
  • Dolby Atmos (True HD)
  • Multichannel PCM
  • Dolby Multichannel PCM

“Multichannel PCM 7.1” is the same as LPCM 7.1. When I watch Blu-ray discs with lossless LPCM audio or lossless DTS-HD Master Audio, the Sonos app displays “Multichannel PCM 5.1” or “Multichannel PCM 7.1” The Sonos app will never display “LPCM 7.1”.

Thank you!

Could I just clarify, though, why does DTS Digital on Xbox transfer as Multichannel PCM 7.1 just like Uncompressed 5.1/7.1 Isn't DTS Digital lossy?

And is Dolby Multichannel PCM 7.1 a lossy format? I'm using Windows 11 and 5.1/7.1 are no longer an option, so I have to use Dolby Atmos for Home Theater. If non-Atmos surround audio is used when Dolby Atmos for Home Theater is used in Windows 11, the Sonos shows Dolby Multichannel PCM 7.1.

I don’t know the exact explanation because my knowledge of this is somewhat limited, but I believe what you are seeing is the result of the Xbox and Windows using a Dolby MAT encoder which converts the original audio to lossless PCM.

  • When Sonos receives Dolby Atmos object data in a Dolby MAT container, the Sonos app will display “Dolby Atmos” rather than “Dolby Atmos (DD+)” or “Dolby Atmos (TrueHD)”.

  • When Sonos receives Dolby MAT with no Dolby Atmos object data, the Sonos app will display “Dolby Multichannel PCM”.

From Sonos:

Note that Dolby Atmos and Dolby Multichannel PCM are passed to Sonos using the Dolby MAT container. Dolby Atmos is Multichannel PCM that includes Atmos object data. Dolby Multichannel PCM does not include Atmos object data.
