Google Assistant - Vanished and cannot be added back on Beam (Gen 1)

As of November 20, after a long power outage of 12 hours, I noticed the following:

  • Google Assistant (GA) vanished - first noted with inability to turn on microphone, verified on Sonos App, on the Sonos Beam Gen 1.
  • Any attempt to re-add GA via either android or ios fails with different symptoms depending on the OS.    Android will not be able to locate any google assistant capable device in the ‘google assistant’ phase post linkage (SSO/OUTH) between google ↔ sonos;  IOS will get there error message ‘There may be a problem’.
  • Verified no former linkage exists in Google Home.
  • I added / removed the SONOS voice control successfully so the Beam is not mechanically challenged.

I’ve reviewed threads, cleared the beam to factory defaults and rebuilt, rebooted the router / sonos devices, all to no effect.   All Sonos devices and controller are up to date.   Still, no ability to add Google Assistant to the beam.

I’ve seen an email thread from three months ago that the GA feature / addition is currently not functioning, but I see no formal announcement of this.   With the value of time, it’s just cheaper to buy a google nest mini and get used to saying ‘hey google’ for home control and ‘hey sonos’ for music … which is honestly rubbish.

Before I waste hours on the phone, can I get an official word if Google Assistant is formally supported.

Looks to me for my issue like its related to android/google version. Wont work for my on my pixel with gemini assistant but will work on older huawei with google assistant. Have been unable to roll back gemini to google assistant on pixel as of yet

For me it started working again. I tried it today and it connected!. I added the Sonos service to my google home with the ‘works with google’ option.

After seeing these recent posts, I tried last night and was successful in connecting two different Google Assistant accounts to two different speakers. The process still appeared to error out at the end, but it succeeded “enough” that it’s there and working now.

Good enough for me, appreciate the other folks noting that this worked for them.

I’m using iOS in case that helps.

I also saw the comments above and successfully re-added Google Assistant to my Sonos One. Both the Sonos app and Google Assistant show its added properly.

Only errors I encountered were on the Google Assistant app, which were resolved by giving it local network access.

It also had a weird UX bug where you couldn’t read the permissions it was asking for, but again, a Google problem, not a Sonos problem.

Great work Sonos developers! Thank you for fixing this. I’m sure it wasnt easy dealing with the hundreds of angry posts on this thread.

I am curious:

Did anybody manage to make Sonos work as the preferred speaker for a Google Home device (e.g. Nest)? As many of you, I managed to connect the Sonos integration to the Google Home Device (Nest) and also add GA on the Sonos. But playing music on Sonos via a Google device still does not work.

Say “OK Google, play music” → “Okay I will play music on Sonos” → Nothing happens

Hi, just wanted to report that the problem was fix for me last week,

I didn’t do anything special, just one day I tried again to add google assistance to the sonos speaker trough the sonos App and integrate the sonos app trough google home app, and didn’t encounter any more of the issues I was having. Probably there was an update in the background that fixed the problem.

Same problem - it seems that since it’s been reported partially fixed the assumption is that it’s all fixed. I expect to see this thread closed as “resolved” any time now.
