This thread is aimed at all of us whom has a Sonos Roam product (and probably a few other Sonos products as well).
This thread aims to solve the following issues:
- Sonos refuses to add google assistant as a voice assitant (getting stuck during onboarding)
- Google Assitant commands can only Stop and Say what it is playing, but not Resume / change it (timers still work)
- Sonos Roam only plays if directly adressed, otherwise responds with “I can not do this on this device”.
I have already solved these issues, the step by step guide is posted bellow as a answer.
The solution i found to these problems are as follows:
Issue #1:
This requierd me to do a full unlinking of the product to my google account,
- Remove assistant from Sonos app, as it tends to get added but not work
- Press the Cogwheel (Settings) in the top right
- Press General Settings
- Select Voice Assistants
- then remove Google Assistant from your device
- Remove the connection from the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app
- Click on your profile in the top right
- Click on Home Settings
- Scroll down and click on “Works with Google”
- Find Sonos and press and unlink
- Remove all Sonos connections from the Google account.
- Open the Google Home app
- Click on your profile in the top right
- Select Manage your Google Account
- open Data and Privacy
- Scroll down to Third Party Apps and Services
- Find Sonos and delete all data
- Add Google Assistant to Sonos app
- Press the Cogwheel (Settings) in the top right
- Press General Settings
- Select Voice Assistants
- add Google Assistant, and select your device.
At this point your device should have Google Assitant added and you can now start talking using the “Hey Google” voice command.
If you are unlucky like me this might then result in Issue #2:
To solve this issue i had to add the Sonos Roam to my Google Home home.
- Add device to Home
- Open the Google Home app
- Click the + (add device)
- Add the Sonos device to the home
You should now be able to tell the assistant to play music on the device using something like:
“Hey Google! Play music on <device-name>”
where <device-name> is whatever you set it to during the setup process when adding it to your home.
If you are yet again unlucky as I was and the device refuses to accept request’s like:
“Hey Google! Play music”
Then you are facing Issue #3.
To fix this issue, we must remove the assistant from the Sonos app again, but this time we do not remove all google data as we did before.
- Remove Google Assistant from the Sonos app
- Press the Cogwheel (Settings) in the top right
- Press General Settings
- Select Voice Assistants
- then remove Google Assistant from your device
- Add Google Assistant to Sonos app
- Press the Cogwheel (Settings) in the top right
- Press General Settings
- Select Voice Assistants
- add Google Assistant, and select your device.
At this point my setup worked, I can now issue commands such as:
“Hey Google! Play music”
Without it complaining about compatability and what not.
Note:
It is mostlikely needed to connect Spotify to both Google Assistant and Sonos apps for correct playback, but I am able to use Sonos exclusive apps as playback as well such as “Sveriges Radio” which is a radio station brodcasting app in Sweden, without adding it to Google Assistant.
