As far as I can tell, the sonos app can no longer connect to Google Assistant on a modern Android phone.
I've un installed, re installed all apps and connections and all that has managed to do is remove my existing Assistant connections on other existing devices.
Then I realised that due to changes in Google Assistant and Gemini it is no longer possible. I'm absolutely over this crap, luckily I can process a return for the new Sonos Move (not the 2..)
Sonos is a waste of time and energy, what a joke!
I think is because Sonos is more designed to Apple products however this also refers to, that you are available to control it from Google Home app :)
Google changed the minimum requirements for adding their system. Older Sonos speakers are ‘grandfathered’, newer Sonos speakers don’t meet the new requirements.

That is no longer true. It's impossible to add google voice assistant to older products as well with Android phones. This is because the google interface has changed and Sonos hasn't kept up.
I'm really peeved, I had one working fine and deliberately bought the older move (1) to use with google voice assistant. Instead of being honest, Sonos says to disconnect and reconnect everything. Now I've lost the original functionality I had before and only after googling I'm Reddit forums did I find out it's permanent.
Have returned the new Sonos Move and I'm looking into longer term changing over to Bose or Audio Pro for my last remaining setup I'm the tv room. That's all I have left, I used to have sonos I'm every room but they have unreliable software.
You could try looking it up (though the community software seems to not want you to find anything), but I remember reading here that uninstalling Gemini from you phone will save the day.

Not possible. There’s no uninstall option for Gemini on my Samsung S24 Ultra and disabling the app makes no difference - the phone eventually times out with the message “There was a problem adding Google Assistant”, so no voice control on my new Beam Gen 2. Frustrating but not entirely unexpected: Google seems to have launched Gemini with absolutely no user consultation and minimal testing, reducing rather than increasing Google Home/Assistant’s ability to carry out everyday tasks.
OK. Could you try to use another phone? Maybe an iPhone?
Thanks for your response rallye. I don’t have an iPhone so I tried an older Android device that has never had Gemini installed, running Android 12 instead of version 15. I thought this might work but the results were the same: a rotating cursor when trying to open Google Assistant, which eventually failed.
There is obviously some issue with the coding of the inter-app communications. Google and Sonos need to sort this out between them but I don’t have faith that it’ll be done any time soon.
Everyone is pointing fingers at either Sonos or Google and probably more so at Sonos.
If you take personal inconveniences out of the equation I think you might see that the incompatibility is more about revenue expenditures. Google made changes to their code to benefit Google and not necessarily to lock Sonos out.
Sonos on the other hand made a decision not to invest resources to make their devices conform to the new Google requirements. By the same token Google isn’t going to expend resources and dollars to adjust their code to suit a niche product like Sonos.
Therefore by unspoken mutual agreement both Google and Sonos have made financial decisions as it relates to their respective brands.
That said the consumer is caught in the middle and sometimes find it easier to blame one side or the other. In reality it just boils down to simple economics.
The situation with Sonos and Google assistants as it happens to be is nothing new in the world of business.
You can argue the points all day long but at the end-of-the-day the results/situation will by all probability remain unchanged.
Full disclosure I use iOS devices but have never considered Google voice for my Sonos. I prefer Alexa. That said I have no skin in the game/debate.

The issue is that Sonos claims the product can be used with Google Assistant and there are many users finding that that just isn’t true. I know we have the option (at least here in the UK) to return the product for a refund since it’s not as advertised, but to do that is a major inconvenience with few alternatives that will actually work with Google.
Correct, Sonos is misleading customers and still making representations that the google assistant/ Sonos interface still works.
Worse, rather than being honest they have hunkered down and are giving customers bad advice that says to delete existing links and try to reconnect.
This leave customers like me with a new device that doesn't do what it says it can, plus I stupidly removed assistant from my existing speakers based on their advice and have lost existing capability. They are liars..
Just joined the community so that maybe my experience can help some.
I had Google Assistant (GA) on two of my Sonos Ones but lost it on the others. Been on the phone for over an hour with agents getting me to do the same rigmarole. First one told me there was a 2 speaker limit. So, I unlinked Sonos from Google, updated all speakers, relinked and then couldn’t add GA to any of them. Last guy told me to try again in 3 hours as a ticket was raised. I was reading these threads as he spoke and said “isn't this issue 8 months old?” He then quickly said good bye. Not even the usual ”can I help you with anything else?
Anyway, last ditched effort, I dug out an old S8 I had in a draw. I installed the current Sonos app. Didn’t update the old style GA it had and tried again. It worked perfectly and now I have GA on all six speakers.
The S8 has Android 9 with One UI 1.0.
