Google Assistant and Sonos

It has been mentioned a lot already but wanted to make a thread solely to say that all the remedies and work around offered by Sonos and Google do not work.

My Sonos Move used to work flawlessly with Google Assistant. Recently it stopped allowing certain functionality like adding to shopping lists or find my phone stating that I had to set up voice match. The problem lies in that within my Google Home app, specifically the voice match setting, the Sonos speaker isn't found, even though it is part of my home and can be used for everything else.

Then, 3 days ago, Spotify completely stopped working with Google Assistant and my Sonos. I can no longer control my music using voice controls, the speaker tells me "Sorry I can't do that on this device"

I have unlinked and uninstalled all three apps (Sonos, Google Home and Spotify) re linked them and updated them multiple times.

The Sonos speaker still isn't showing in the Google Assistant voice match setting so not allowing me to get personalised functionality as it did before AND still cannot control Spotify.

It will still control my smart home devices such as lights, shutters and smart plugs.

Hi @Bobby Onyx,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having issues using Google Assistant on your Sonos speaker.

I don’t use Google Assistant myself, but I’ve spoken with a colleague who does. They also can’t see the Voice Match setting in their Google Home app for their speakers. While we don’t have any information on that, as it was a feature of the Google Home app. We suspect that with the overhaul to the app for Gemini, this feature was removed, though you’ll have to check with Google regarding this.

While it’s strange that your home automation commands work while music commands don’t, it could still be related to the outage listed on our status page. My colleague had this issue but was able to resolve it by fully removing Google Assistant from Sonos, removing Sonos from Google Home, then starting from scratch. I assume this is what you’ve already done by removing and re-adding them, which is what we and the support article for commands not working suggest.

I would suggest reaching out to our support team, as they have the necessary tools available to look into your system and see what’s going wrong.

I have not updated my primary home (the one including my Sonos speakers) with Gemini for Google Home, but I set up a separate home to experiment with one Google Home Mini speaker. I found that setting up Voice Match was an undocumented essential requirement of Gemini. So my advice for the moment would be that you should not enable Gemini for Google Home if you want to keep using the crippled Google Assistant on Sonos.

It’s pretty clear that Google Assistant on Sonos is on its last legs, so you should be doing transition planning even if you can manage to keep it stumbling along for the moment. I figure I will just switch to Alexa and move one of my Google Home Minis next to the Sonos speakers. I already have an Echo Dot sitting there  next to the Sonos speakers, and when a command to Google Assistant doesn’t work, I repeat it to Alexa. which has the Sonos speakers set as the default music speakers for the group. Should be easy enough to flip Alexa and Google.
