I have had Google Assistant installed on my Sonos One speaks for years now. But for no reason whatso ever it stopped working (just another Sonos feature). Every time I said “Hey Google”, the speaker would take many seconds to reply then told me “there has been a glitch, try again in a few seconds” but it just wouldn’t work.
I followed the instructions to uninstall the feature from the speaker and then reinstall - but it just will not work. I don’t know if it is because the Google Assist app has evolved leaving Sonos behind or what but it get blocked every time when, in the Sonos app I add assistant → Add Google Assistant → Open Google Assistant app…. and then it just hangs.
I’ve checked my Google Assistant app but I’m pretty sure it has been updated since the last time I installed the speakers. So I just can not get past this point.
I use the assistant a lot as I have smart devices all over the house. If I can’t get this to work, I will have to get rid of the Sonos speakers and buy Google ones.
Oh - and since updating the software, the mic will not turn on. Brilliant.

Starting with your last remark: the mic does not work when there is no voice assistant installed. You’ve uninstalled GA, so this is expected behaviour.
As I understand it it is hard to install GA on Sonos once you’ve gone over to Gemini - one of the reasons I have not gone over yet. You could try to reverse this and then try again to install GA on Sonos.
Google indeed seems to have left Sonos behind a bit. On my system commanding my smart home still seems to work fairly well, but other things like my “good morning” command, that used to include a volume command to the speakers as well as bringing me the radio news from two different sources, stopped working a long time ago. I own a Nest Mini and on that it still works well.

Yes - very good point about the mic - I understand that now.
I switched back from Gemini to Google Assist. The process did change slightly but I still get blocked. I just can’t connect. I’m told that the speakers (which are currently steaming the radio) are not connected. So I don’t really know how to convince the app otherwise.
I managed to connect to Alexa.
I love the sound quality of my Sonos but I really can’t carry on - it isn’t fun to own because situations like this make it really hard work.
I had a Sonos Beam for a few years until that disconnected itself from the Wifi. Neither I or Sonos support could fix it (they told me to buy a new one) so that’s been sitting at the bottom of my wardrobe for the last 3 years. I lost a lot of faith in the product then and it’s been hard to reverse that feeling - hence why I will have to go to Google for the hardware.
In my mind, that is exactly what Google wants. Rather than support Sonos hardware, they’d rather have you purchase hardware from Google, where they make more profit, among other things. There are other issues, too, much less nefarious, I suspect, but I think having full control over their situation is a major factor.
