If you haven’t already started creating them, will you please create Sonos earbuds? I don’t like headphones and Bose is great and all, but I’d definitely purchase Sonos ear buds the day they are released. The sound quality is unmatched. Thanks.

Would you want these earbuds to have wifi and connect to your system the same way Ace does, or would they just be bluetooth earbuds?

As a Sonos Room or only as an attachment to a soundbar or Bluetooth?

The Ace headphones are not wifi.  They are Bluetooth only. But the usb port can be used as well.

From the product page.

Considering one of the problems with the Ace being a full Sonos zone was the power and size requirements of full WiFi support, I doubt that capability is going to be forthcoming in the smaller form factor of earbuds.

Looks like the use of the term “WiFi” has taken this thread on a tangent. Perhaps the original response to the OP might have been alternatively worded as:

  • Do you want the earbuds to communicate with a Sonos soundbar in the same manner as the Ace?

No mention of WiFi as the communication medium. Thus avoiding any misinterpretation as to the earbuds being a “WiFi” ear set in terms of creating a Sonos room.

Whether or not making earbuds communicate with a Sonos soundbar being an engineering/design non-starter would just be a wait and see. Unless someone has proprietary information that sheds more light on the subject.

Note the weasel words "Wi-Fi Technology" as many things use Wi-Fi Technology but won't connect to a home Wi-Fi system as the "technology" is not a word interchangeable with compatible.

Once again I call for an adult to report to Sonos Marketing and force them to quit playing word games and produce reliable and useful documents. (Not holding my breath.)

I am happy with the way I worded my question.  Since quite a few people want the Ace to operate as a sonos room over wifi, it’s legit to consider this request would also want earbuds to do the same.  Connecting to a soundbar (over wifi direct in this case) to a soundbar like Ace is also a legit  question about the requirement.  Since OP mentioned looking for a Bose replacement, it does not look like they care about these features at all, hence my question.

Wouldn’t that require a fundamental change in the way the Sonos software works? Given the nature and cost of miniaturization, it’s unlikely to put a Sonos ‘room’ in earbuds, without substantial battery (and complications when WiFi is left behind). We could discuss this for days, though…and may ;)

I suppose if Sonos were to fundamentally change the way their systems work, but I’d think it unlikely. It does make some things harder, some easier. But it’s a choice, one that it feels like Sonos has made, and unlikely to change.

Possibly Sonos could create a portable (no speaker, just Bluetooth) Sonos Room device, maybe using the Play's internals (minus amp and speakers) as a starting point?

That could serve audio to the Ace as well as ear buds without the need for large batteries on the phones/buds.

To not impact other Sonos device sales it might need a proprietary Bluetooth connection. Sonos likely doesn't want to serve up a Bluetooth signal that would allow non-Sonos speakers to connect.

That would still (because it is a room, playing via Bluetooth) require an underlying change to the Sonos paradigm, by making the controller a ‘player’, rather than a window on what the ‘room’ is doing.

I wasn't suggesting a controller, but a player device.

No controls other than play/pause and volume buttons.

It would function as other Sonos Rooms, needing a controller as they do.

Basically replacing the current amplifier and speakers with a Bluetooth transmitter.

Think of the Port but simplified and the Bluetooth transmitter internal rather than plugged in.

That is something I am considering for my Ace if I can find a deal on a Port. It would also work for ear buds come to think of it.

There are so many issues, as soon as that ‘extra device’ leaves power and WiFi, as earbuds normally do, but sure.

Ahh…isn’t that Pinewood-ish which has been shelved indefinitely. 🤔

I know brain-storming what “if’s” can be exciting. However, if Sonos didn’t see fit to integrate room technology for the Ace due to the limitations I believe everyone knows…why would they skip to a form factor as small as ear buds to IMO attempt “alchemy” or something in the realm of Star Trek 🤔 No offense intended…but I just don’t see where this discussion is going.

Frankly, integrating the the same tech as the Ace to communicate with a soundbar may not be doable. However if possible I’m on it as an early buyer. 😂

Pinewood had a lot more features, designed to be a TV streamer.

Sonos did make a purchase years back.

I think that would be ideal for a case like this, however since it was not used on the Ace, I have my doubts that it would used now.  Perhaps it’s not good enough for an atmos signal. They could maybe do something where they se BLE for stereo signals, and wifi for atmos.  Totally guessing here.

Agreed.

I do like the idea of earbuds that are bluetooth only, don’t connect to your Sonos system at all.  But that would be a big departure for Sonos, and the CEO has recently said that they want to focus on their core customers and products, so it would be a big surprise if they go that direction.
