Question

Music Library Capacity and inability to Power Down

I recently purchased

Sonos Arc Ultra

Sub 4

Era 100

While I am happy with the sound quality a few things annoy me.

I play from my NAS..Why the limit of The limit of 65000 tracks?

I have several apps that cost a few bucks that can cope with my entire library of approx 180000 tracks.

I find this limit pretty stupid. Hopefully this will be addressed.

Also there does not seem to be any option to power down any of the Sonos gear even when the TV is powered down..Only option is to switch it off at the power point as far as I can tell.

(unless I’ve missed something).

My old Sony soundbar had no such issue.

Limit, inherited from older Sonos with limited internal memory.

Power, Sonos enters a low power state when idle. You don't unplug your TV  when done watching do you, you just put it in a low-power state?

If the units were powered down to zero power, they could not respond to wireless controllers prior to some physical interaction with each unit. If you need to power the units down to zero, you could use remote controlled outlets -- that may require their own power.

Note: Sonos doesn’t store music itself, just pointers to the library (mp3 tags, essentially), and as suggested by @Stanley_4 , based on older devices with limited memory, there’s a maximum amount of storage there. It isn’t specifically 65,000 tracks, but a sum of the memory referencing all that data. For larger libraries, Sonos does provide a connection to Plex, which, to my knowledge, has no such limit.

Smart outlets are an option but I use a dumb push-button one for any device that is hard to unplug.

Since I have problems posting links search Amazon for this switch, very handy and unobtrusive.

Cordinate Extension Cord with Switch On/Off Plug 2 Pack, 6 Ft Braided Power Cord Outlet Switch, 3 Prong, Slip Resistant Base, Tabletop/Wall Mount, Perfect for Lamps/Holiday Lights, White/Gray, 50033

What are you expecting?  This is a user forum.  You don’t have to be rude as all the above was comment/advice from people that have been Sonos users for years.  The track limit has been explained in many posts and is there to keep older gear functional.  The number of people that the limit affects is probably very small so I doubt it will change.  One of the Moderators may add some comment but Sonos rarely give any indication of changes to their products.  The priority has been to preserve backward compatibility.

As for standby power consumption, Sonos is designed to be on 24/7.  Newer models use less power at standby than older ones but none is significant and as above switch plugs are an option.

In what way do you consider the responses you’ve received as being flippant or not “serious”? You’ve had sensible and accurate answers to your questions from some other users.

I see, when you don’t like an answer, you lash out.  Well, I’m going to try to further answer your question, please withhold posting if you have nothing else to add besides this type of useless comment.

At last count, streaming from music services and online radio accounts for 93% of Sonos usage (and that count was a while ago).  That makes streaming local files a niche, and those that have greater than 65K local files a niche of a niche.  For those in that niche of a niche, Sonos has a solution - Plex.

Plex is a good workaround for the local library limits, but there’s a search bug that greys out tracks and makes them unplayable in Sonos. I use search a ton, so that’s a dealbreaker for me, YMMV.

@nubu a few other routes worth checking out:

• Cloud: iBroadcast and Astiga — both run as music services in Sonos but you need to upload your library to the cloud.

• Self-hosted: Lyrion (free) and Roon ($$$) both run on your own NAS/server with third-party control software.
