Imported Playlist on Android will not add or play

I can't add Imported Playlists to the queue in the Android app from my Music Library.  This was working previously in the Android app.  Doing the same Imported Playlist in the Windows version of Sonos app is working without issue so it is not an issue with the Playlist.

The Android app can see the tracks in the playlist, but if I click on the play or shuffle icon it just spins away doing nothing.

If I try to add or replace the queue with the tracks from the playlist it just spins.

If I click on the three dots next to.the track and select Play Now, the track plays.

This is broken for even Imported Playlists with 1 track.

Is this a known issue that's been broken in a recent app update? I have searched but can't see anything about imported playlists broken on Android recently.

Android App Version:  83.01.9

As update, I reached out to Sonos support where the AI support chat ran through all the basics, but it did not resolve. Transferred to a person, where I was told to update my Music Library which didn’t resolve.  I explained this is a bug but was told by Sonos Support agent that this feature is not available in the Android and the IOS mobile app.  I mentioned this was a previous feature so either it was deprecated without notice or its a bug.  I was told to just use the Windows desktop app to manage imported playlists.

I’ve paid for “Phonos Ultimate” which is an Android alternative to the native Sonos Android app.  I can add Imported Playlists without issue on Android with it.

Hello Sonos!

Problem still not fixed. Is this functionality officially deprecated now?

How would we users know?

You have to ask Sonos that kind of thing by calling support.

Sonos support is only open during working days at working hours, and I must be close to my system to make tests. It means that i must one day off

This forum is also literally full of threads on which Sonos staff members have commented in the past…! 😉

Anyway, I reached out to their support team today and was told that they are aware of the issue, but there is currently no timeline for a fix to be released.

Their own internal documentation suggests two workarounds - queueing up local playlists from a desktop Mac / PC or adding tracks one by one to the queue - neither of which is a very helpful substitute for getting this functionality working properly again on mobile devices!

I chatted with Tech Support again today (it’ s been more than 3 months!)  Their answer: “it's still under investigation and currently do not have an ETA on when this will be fixed.”

Unsurprising but the issue is still not fixed in the latest iOS update today (88.0.51)

Still no fix for this problem in the latest iOS app update (89.0.1).

I’ve given up waiting for Sonos and found a workaround (this is MacOS only unfortunately).

There is a utility called “Playlist Manager” available from Doug’s AppleScripts which allows you to batch edit playlists in Apple Music - including batch-exporting them as .M3U files.

https://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=mxplaylistmanager

I’ve created a folder on my NAS drive (Music > Playlists) and used the script to batch-export the .M3U files into it. It works with smart playlists as well as user-defined ones.

All the exported M3U playlists now show up on the Sonos iOS app and can be queued to a speaker as before.

The only slight disappoinment is that playlists are listed in the app using the filename (eg “Decades_-_1980s.m3u”) rather than being parsed into a more readable format.

It’s pretty dire that Sonos broke existing functionality within their own app and have still not managed to push out a fix - however at least my system is now back up & running properly after 5 months!

Thanks for all the notes above. I’ve been having the same issue with imported playlists since the Sonos App Debacle. I used to be able to use imported playlists as alarms, play them from my phone/tablet apps and it suddenly stopped working. Since the update…

  • I couldn’t play imported playlists from iPadOS or Android apps
  • I couldn’t add an imported playlist to an alarm without making it a favourite first
  • Even after that, the playlist wouldn’t play at alarm time, giving me the sodding chime instead

I’ve finally spent some time with the Windows app to discover that it works just as it always did - I can play and set up alarms with imported playlists just like always.

I think I might import my music and playlists into my Plex setup to a) allow me to play/manage imported playlists from my apps and b) let me play my home music while out and about with my Roam.
