The New Sonos App and Future Feature Updates

Hey all, today we're sharing a message from our chief innovation officer, Nick Millington in the announcement here. Going forwards we will update that topic and we therefore close this one for further replies.

We set out to create a more personalized and effortless listening experience with the updated Sonos app. It was rebuilt from the ground up to ensure it could support future innovation in the years to come. For its initial rollout, we focused on how we could answer some of the most common requests from our customers, including increased reliability, performance, and faster access to music.

Many of you have shared valuable feedback on both the improvements that have made your experience better, as well as the areas where we fell short. We are listening to all of your comments and working to address them as quickly as possible. Over the coming weeks, we will reintroduce the below features, while fixing bugs and performance issues. Thank you for your engagement and we look forward to building upon this first step to create a listening experience that meets everyone’s needs.

Yep. I'm a Product Manager and I fight these battles on a regular basis. I usually win but every now and again some idiot sells something that doesn't yet exist and isn't yet scheduled for now in the roadmap, and we end up having to pick up the pieces.

I think our sales teams probably hate me, but keeping the lights on is more important than building new flashing lights. You don't do the latter at the expense of the former.

Good communication and alignment on strategy across the board is key. Easier said than done though.

Going through this with my PM right now.  2 projects developed concurrently, one has an external deadline that can’t be missed and marketing wants that one done after a project that has only an internal deadline that can be missed.  They can’t understand why their personal marketing deadline needs to be moved to accommodate a deadline that involves synchronizing with projects in 48 other states.

I mean, the tomfoolery keeps us in a job at least. 🤣

When will Sonos customers be able to access iTunes libraries?

As far as I know, you can. You just have to set the correct path as documented previously.

I have been able to get all of my songs into Sonos, but it will not recognize any albums or playlists. It is just one big folder of tracks with no subfolders. I have not been able to get through to Sonos to try and fi it. So the only choice would be to reconstruct all of the playlists manually in the Sonos controller, and it is not user-friendly enough for that.

What does your path look like?

Available now

iOS - (Released on September 19)
Version 80.09.05

  • Improvements to setup flow
  • Improved performance when browsing content in Home and in Browse
  • Improved queue management including ability to delete, reorder and scroll
  • Added ability to set appearance between light mode/dark mode/system default
  • Continued improvements to the user interface
  • Added Trueplay support for iOS 18

I still cannot play my own playlists from Apple Music. Is this just not a feature anymore? I bought my system specifically to listen to my own music. I was able to import all of my songs but there are no playlists or albums, and it is extraordinarily tedious to build playlists in the Sonos controller.

Tried calling Sonos again - now it’s down to a 45 minute wait time to get through to someone. Seriously - what a joke.

Help me understand better.  I might be asking stupid questions because I don’t use a Mac.  Is anll your music on a Mac?  Are you referring to playlists of your own music you curated on a Mac?  Are the playlists you curated from that personal library on the Mac?  If so where are the playlist stored on the Mac? Does the Apple Music service on the Sonos app have the capability to see your music including your playlists?

My playlists are all M3U text documents and all show in the Sonos app.

Hey, Sonos….

7 weeks since Android users have gotten any updated functionality (except adding dark mode).  Any idea when we can expect …. something?  Anything?

It’s supposed to be every 2 weeks. Give or take 5 or 6 I guess.

Just did today’s firmware update and IOS update. No change to holding my place in the playlist. Still takes you to the top of queue when you exit the Now Playing Window. So I guess, from the release notes, today must be Android Day.  I hope they at least addressed the open Android issues.
