When The new design of apps launched in May 2024 I found that the only controller left that would allow you to control your sonos devices without an Internet connection was the Windows Desktop App.

 

This appears to no longer be the case and the Windows app now fails without an internet connection.

 

Can I ask

in which version was this change made? 

and can we get a copy of the old version from somewhere?

When The new design of apps launched in May 2024 I found that the only controller left that would allow you to control your sonos devices without an Internet connection was the Windows Desktop App.

Having internet connection is a requirement in order to be able to control your Sonos system via the Sonos App from any device, be that a smartphone, tablet, Mac or Windows PC.

In order to detect and control your Sonos, you will need the device on which you are using the Sonos App to be in the same network as your Sonos System and with internet access.

Try a third party app (eg mine, see profile), I am not aware of any internet requirement for those. Obviously you are limited to local file playback in this mode.

In fact I was not previously aware of the desktop app suddenly requiring this, particularly as it has taken very few changes for years.


I blocked the internet on my PC and did some testing.

Both S1 and S2 apps worked fine.

I also tried both of my Windows apps and they worked fine too, though were slow to startup as they tried to get artwork from the internet. Once loaded they worked fine.

@Editor what exactly makes you think the Sonos desktop S2 app requires internet access?

Sonos have previously confirmed the system is capable of working in an offline mode with limitations.

 


The official answer confused me too.  Sure, some things would require Internet access (streaming obviously), but basic control didn't necessarily need it I thought.

I understand what you are stating but it doesn't answer my question as to which recent version of the windows app requires an internet connection to play from the media library. I tested this several months ago and this was not the case then so I just need the version where this changed.

My response was not directed at you, however, if you read the article it states if there is a version mismatch, then you need to get all devices and controllers to the same supported version again. Has one of your controllers or the firmware for the speakers been updated causing your issue with the windows app?

It does not, I verified this on both Desktop apps above.
