Why is Spotify Lossless unavailable on Sonos Amp via Spotify Connect?

I’m trying to play music from Spotify in ‘Lossless’ quality on my Sonos Amp via Spotify Connect, but the option doesn’t appear. In the Spotify app, it shows (for the Sonos Amp):

  • "This device currently supports streaming qualities up to 'Very high'."

  • "This device is not compatible with lossless audio quality. To listen in lossless, try changing your device."

I’ve tried connecting via both mobile and desktop (Mac) Spotify apps and have already followed Spotify’s official “Listen in lossless” steps (https://support.spotify.com/uk/article/spotify-connect/).

Has anyone successfully played Spotify Lossless on a Sonos Amp via Spotify Connect, or is this a known limitation? Any advice or workarounds would be appreciated!

Sonos announced that Spotify lossless will be available in October.

From what I’ve seen in Spotify’s rollout, lossless streaming is gradually becoming available across different markets through October, and some users are already able to access it now. I was hoping Sonos might follow a similar timeline, so I’ll keep an eye on updates (from the Sonos side) and see how it comes through on the Amp via Spotify Connect as mentioned in October.

Lossles is available where I live. I can enable it on my Spotify app, but not play it to Sonos. They have not matched roll outs.

I have Lossless as well... so earlier than October.

Apparently, there’s a workaround.

If you download the Spotify TV app on Apple or Google TV and stream through there (assuming you use a soundbar etc). When it’s playing content just change the streaming quality on the app.

Edit: I’m not sure it’s actually outputting lossless though as the Sonos app doesn’t indicate so.

Spotify App using Airplay 2 uses AAC, it is not lossless, the Spotify App does not reflect what Airplay is doing further down the chain.

Which kind of proves what a waste of time lossless really is, when folks think Airplay gives it to them.

Sigh - these screen shots of the Spotify app are meaningless, post one from the Sonos app that shows CD quality or better using Spotify Connect. As posted previously once the music goes via AirPlay it gets converted into AAC but the Spotify App is not savvy to this.

Anyway… Spotify lossless is due very soon!

Try it today… Spotify Connect now gives you lossless audio on Sonos hardware.

Hi. I just tried - from germany. Doesn't work. As described, i see the option but for my sonos connect it's greyed out. I still use  the sonos s1 app because i have the connect and speakers for long time so ist gen1 i suppose. Could that be an issue or just wait till the have it matched?

Soon, maybe not everywhere at the same time.

There will likely be an official announcement once it is widely available.

I’d imagine Spotify is going to ‘roll’ it out carefully, so ‘official’ announcements may take time, as the process occurs.

Such a significant change probably needs care, it isn’t something I’d want to ‘flip a switch’ on.

Spotify Lossless will play through speakers connected to a Sonos Amp.

In the first picture you see I have a room called Speakers with the primary Sonos component being a Sonos Amp.

In the second picture you see what’s playing from inside the Sonos App. It shows Spotify Lossless.

In third picture you see the actual Spotify App showing Lossless.

Checked today and it looks like Lossless is finally showing up on Spotify and on Sonos Amp via Spotify Connect! 🥳

For me in germany with Sonos connect on arcam avr550 it is not working yet.

The Connect transfers audio in your case to a 3rd party amp. That may have an effect on what you are able to stream. Not 100% sure…so I suggest you call Sonos tech support for a definitive answer.

FYI: Got it figured out thanks to really good Sonos hotline. My Sonos Connect is 12years old and thus neither hardware nor Software S2 is compatible. Cheapest option to work lossless is new Sonos Port for 450€. Which is REALLY a lot since I neither need the DAC nor an AMP. Simply stream Spotify with digital out to my pre/power Amp. Unfortunatly Sonos doesn't have a cheaper option for that. However I get 30% discout when handing in my old Sonos connect.

If you only have the one Sonos device you could just replace it with a streamer from WiiM, the WiiM Mini supports Spotify lossless and much cheaper than a Sonos Port.

Yeah, this is a common issue right now. The short version is that Spotify Lossless isn’t fully available on all Sonos devices via Spotify Connect yet. Your Sonos Amp is showing “Very High” because the rollout is gradual, and some devices or regions haven’t unlocked the lossless option.

A few things you can try: make sure your Sonos firmware and app are fully updated, and double-check that your Spotify Premium account has Lossless enabled in the settings. Even then, some users report that Lossless only appears after a few days or after a restart of both the Sonos and Spotify apps.

Basically, it’s not something you’re doing wrong, it’s just a current limitation with Spotify Connect on certain Sonos devices. For now, you might need to wait until the feature is officially supported on your Amp.
