I know that Sonos speakers are limited to playback of 24/48 files.  I know that the Sonos system will convert 24/192, 24/96, 24/88.2 files to 24/48.  Does it also up convert 24/44.1.

My real question is, is it better to allow the Sonos system to convert the files on the fly to the 24/48 resolution or would using a third party app to make the conversion to 24/48 prior to playback be a better option?  Would there be any gain/loss in performance and sound quality by converting those files prior to playback on Sonos equipment

Here are the supported audio formats. Internally the players have been 24bit since inception.

Use a 3rd party program to convert the audio formats to be played on SONOS.

There good technical reasons to record in high bit rate 24 or 32bit formats. Very high res files can be processed with less risk of audio degradation. With respect to final distribution to the consumer, there are no peer reviewed studies proving that there is an audible difference beyond 44.1/16. In any case high res fans always demand something higher than 48/24. Many studios will use 384/32 or 768/32 for their recordings, yet consumers don’t seem to be demanding these formats at home.

With respect to SONOS operation in the home, high res transmission requires more network traffic and greatly increases the risk of wireless music interruption due to network interference.
