Volume default on Connect

I would like to be able to set the volume of certain rooms (that have an amp with external volume control) to a higher (or lower) initial volume. In the living room I have to either turn my external amp way up when selecting Sonos as input (and remember!!! to turn it down when switching input so the tv input don't blow the speakers) or when grouping rooms turn that one room all the way up in Sonos). I like the rooms to be the same volume across inside Sonos so they all reflect the actually volume level.

So basically adjusting the delta volume per device when set to variable line out.

I have not found a way to achieve this yet.

Describe your system for us. (model numbers) I’m not sure what you mean by “amp”. Is this a SONOS product or a 3rd party device? Are you using Volume controls in the speaker wiring?

Sorry. It is a Sonos Connect that is connected to a hifi amp (Rotel) via AUX. For the actually volume output to match the sound on fx Play:1's in the kitchen I need to crank the volume up on the Rotel amp so the Sonos volume match and can be adjusted equally (but remember to turn this down before switching input to the tv) - or crank up the volume on the Connect in the Sonos app, but then lose the ability to turn it up as much. I.e. when Sonos volume is 20 in the kitchen it is 60 on the Connect to match the sound level. And tuning up on the Rotel amp risks the speakers as any other input need to be lower.

So I would like a way to set the volume starting point on the the Connect higher than on the others.

Make any sense? 🙂

Thanks 👍

Use a level control on the TV output. There are many available, here is one example. It’s a one time adjustment.

Thanks, good suggestion 👍 I would however prefer it in-app delta volume control / offset, so I don't need extra boxes laying around - also less new manufacturing to save the planet 😉

But thanks for the idea.

If you are a DIY, or have a DIY friend, a simple resistor network will do the job. This could be a small ‘lump’ in the cable.

Have you tinkered with CONNECT’s Line-In settings

@buzz Thanks. I have actually not looked at hooking up the tv to the Sonos Connect phono input if that is what you mean, as I read that the processing latency (analog>digital>analog) could give lip sync issues between the tv and the audio. As it seems to be the Sonos Connect default output that is low rather than the rest of my amp inputs that are high I focused on that.

I don't have any of the new Sonos tech, not even optical... my Rotel amp is oldschool, I try to stick to older or vintage equipment with splashes of streaming 🙂

I just thought that adding a volume offset per player in the app would be an easy win for more than me, albeit I know that nothing is or comes easy when taking about the app or changes to it 🙂

But I do appreciate the suggestions!

one possibility you can try that may work for you you can put a volume limit on all your Sonos speakers apart from the connect this would work but you will then limit the volume on them

to try open app then go to Settings > Your System > [Room Name] > Volume Limit in the app

example if you put 50% limit the volume bar works the same in the app but when its at full volume the speaker is at 50% volume and when set to 50% volume the speaker will be at 25%

will work but if you like the speakers loud may be a issue give it a try

If you decide to cancel the volume limit turn the speakers down before you do it as the volume will shot up

Important to note the Connect and other Sonos do not have a Phono input, they have a Line-In one.

The signal on the Line-In has levels that are much higher than pbono levels and it does not have the RIAA equalization  circuit required to reproduce sound from a phono cartridge. They will work with a turntable that has an internal or external Phono preamp.
