Is it possible to use the ERA speakers (or other speakers for that matter) as radio without using the app. Meaning you can turn on a favorite radio station from the top of the speaker and not have to start it from your phone.

Not really. You would need to use a third-party controller like a smart button that allows you to create button presets of your favorites stations or playlists. I use IKEA’s SYMFONISK sound remote and it works really well with Sonos speakers. It does require a hub to work though.
